When making Rice Crispy treats...?!

Question: I just made my first batch of rice crispy treats, and they were a sticky mess that did not want to mix at all. It all solidified on the bottom and I crushed most of the cereal when trying to mix it. Plus my huge bowl didnt seem big enough. Any tips to make these kid favorite treats easier to make?

I normally up the butter to a full stick. Using half a cup of butter makes them a litle softer and gives you a LITTLE more time to stir in the Krispies before it gets hard. I always measure my Krispies before I do anything else. Then I prepare mine on the stove pot in a large pot--my "spagetti pot" is a 3.5 quart pan. I melt the butter then mix in the marshmallows (using mini ones is easier IMHO), add in a tsp. of vanilla, remove from heat and stir in the Krispies with a heatproof spoon coated in PAM or other cooking spray. Stir, stir, stir as fast as you can then dump into your coated pan and I press them down with greased fingertips. Messy but you can always lick your fingers clean--YUM-O!

Either use more rice crispies cereal or less marshmallow 'filling'. Hope this helps!

Did you cook it too long or make the heat too high? Were the marshmallows fresh? Just some thoughts.

It sounds like you used straight marshmallows, which would burn and stick to the pan. :3 Next time, try melting 1/3 cup butter (about half a stick) of butter in with the marshmallows, and stir constantly to make sure that nothing sticks to the bottom of the pan.

I use spray on oil to ensure that the pot, bowl and spoon I use don't stick. I have also had to spray my hands and press the squares into the pan.

get a bigger bowl and if you use a spoon use your hand it will not break as much of the cereal.plus adding more cereal will make more and make it more crunchy.

3 tablespoons margarine or butter
1 package (10 oz. about 40) regular marshmallows
- or -
4 cups miniature marshmallows
6 cups Rice Krispies?

Directions
1. In a large microwave safe bowl, heat margarine and marshmallows at HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth.

2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated. Cool slightly. Put into a prepared pan, I put waxed paper n a pan and spray with pam and then it's really easy to take them out and cut when cool.

Microwave cooking times may vary.

CONVENTIONAL DIRECTIONS:
Melt margarine in large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat. Follow steps 2 and 3 above.

Note

For best results, use fresh marshmallows.

1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow creme can be substituted for marshmallows.

The recipe should call for butter melted with the marshmallows, get a bigger bowl and yes, it is a mess. You have to mix it fast. Crispies, marshmallow butter mix, stir fast, make sure marshmallow mix is well melted. Use a spatula for mixing, have a 9x13 buttered pan waiting, transfer mix to pan while still warm, use spatula or buttered hand to press down mix (I use my hands)
