Can I substitute leeks for scallions?!

Question: Novice cook here......Making a recipe and I don't have scallions. Recipe calls for one bunch plus a little bit of the green part of the scallions. I have some leeks and some sweet onions. What substitution do you suggest? Thanks.

Chives would be closer to scallions than leeks. Scallions are a bit stronger than leeks and the green part of the leeks is kind of tough. If it is something that doesn't require the scallions be cooked, I would use the sweet onion and a bit of dried chives. For something that is going to be cooked (like filling for potstickers) I would run to the store and get scallions since any substitution is really going to effect the taste.

Leeks are a bit tougher than scallions. I'd say that if you were going to saute or simmer your dish that you might just get away with using leeks over scallions...but you shouldn't use leeks raw or semi-cooked.

Also, you need to be sure your leeks are clean because they get grit in the white bulb part.
