as a fellow aussie, never heard of it... what is it for? sweet or savoury?

EDIT - have seen the answers below mine and still don't know what cool whip is... lol

EDIT 2: it sounds like that cream in a can dude

It is a product such as Cool Whip found in a plastic tub in the frozen food case in an American Supermarket. It's a whipped cream substitute. Cool Whip is not all that healthy but it is so convenient and tastes good.

It is like a whipped cream (one brand here is called Cool Whip).

gosh, I'm american, and I can tell you it's probably "Cool WHip" and it's made with partially Hydroginated crap..I won't touch it. It's sweet, and basically a FAKE whipped cream. BUNK THAT JUNK, hehee!! Just use homemade sweet whipped cream, or store bought if you have it avail. sorry, I've never been to Australia ;( Poor me. GOod luck, mate!

It is like frozen whipped cream but it maintains its shape. You just thaw it in the refrigerator and use it in your recipes. It is sweeter and thicker than whipped cream but I use it all the time in place of when the recipe calls for whipping cream - whipped. I hate taking the time to do that. This is quick and simple and at the ready!

Whipped cream... you can make your own with heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a beater.

cool whip is what it is (it is good on cake and pie)

i don't think you can substitute cool whip with whipped cream in a can b/c cool whip is a much thicker consistency. i can't describe it if you've never had it but there's so many american recipes that use it. it's good on so many desserts but since it's non-dairy i have no clue what it's made of. my mother calls it disgusting. i guess it's a poor man's whipped cream. lol

frozen whipped topping is how our already made whipping cream is stored and sold in our supermarkets (unless you buy the kind in the can). when the recipe is calling for frozen whipped topping, its calling for a tub of whipped cream. what its not specifying is that you need to thaw it first before you use it in your recipe.
you can make fresh whipped cream and use that in its place. (in fact would make a richer flavor). I believe a tub of frozen whipped topping is equivalent to about 2 cups.
