Can I take the paddle out of a breadmachine?!

Question: At what stage, if any, can I remove the paddle from a bread machine to prevent the huge hole in the loaf? I thought just before the bake mode but I don't want to make it flop as it is rising.
I have a panasonic SD200, Thanks

Before the final rise is the best time. If you wait until before the loaf bakes you could miss it. Time it the first time and it'll be at the same point to remove the paddle after that for all loaves.
I have a Panasonic too. I stopped baking in the machine because I like a normal shaped loaf instead of that giant mushroom cap thing and didn't like the hole either. Instead I just do the dough cycle and rise it and bake it in the oven which doesn't take any longer.

Take it out just before the final rise.

In principle, you could remove it after the last kneading, just before the bake phase.begins. In practice, catching this point will be a pain.
