TECHNICALLY, barbeque means slow cooking over low heat for a very long time, sometimes hours. In this way, the smokey flavor of the heat source is infused into the flesh. Basically, the meat is baked, using heat carried by convection currents from the heat source.
Grilling is cooking at relatively high temperatures over a heat source, radiating infrared heat. The flesh is seared, with the outside cooked more than the inner meat.
While popular conception has that barbeque is in the liquid sauce, many barbeque recepies use a dry rub, BEFORE the cooking to put in flavor.
My favorite is the barbeque sauces, added on after the cooking.

Oh, no. Not again. I don't know what part of the country this idea comes from, but barbecuing is NOT NOT NOT the same as grilling.
Traditional barbecue is cooking meat in a pit oven, usually with a sauce over the meat, either during cooking or after, or sometimes both. Very common cooking method in Colonial times, particularly in Virginia/North Carolina/South Carolina, but as people moved across the country, barbecuing moved too. The word "barbecue" actually comes from the Caribbean, where they use a "barbicoa", or in-ground pit oven/sacred fire pit to roast meat over sticks.
Barbecue sauce can be tomato-based, vinegar-based, or mustard-and-vinegar based. Or barbecue can refer to dry spice rub on the meat.
Barbecued chicken would probably be treated with a barbecue sauce. (And I think BBQ sauce along with swiss cheese and all the other stuff is just too much going on one little sandwich!)

grilled is grilled!!! it can have lots of different flavors marinated on it and basted on it but it is not barbecued!!!
Barbecue is slow cooked and allows the barbecue sauce to seep in as it is cooked!!

It is like the difference between a doughnut and a bismark!! Yes, the two are cooked similarly, but there the similarity ends!!! one is slightly messy and the other is incredibly messy!
