Canned potato question?!

Question: I just bought 2 cases of canned whole and sliced potatoes, because I was thowing out too many bad taters from sitting around. My problem is they taste like the can. Does nayone have a trick to getting rid of the canned taste other than SUPER SEASONING?

Try rinsing them vigorously in cold water. Then let them soak in cold water for a few hours, rinse again...... and then prepare them like you normally would. The soaking and rinsing may help to pull some of the canned flavors out of the potatoes.

I don't know of any tricks. Canned potatoes are a crappy product, regardless of how you prepare them. The restaurant where I work uses them. I personally cannot stand them and I think they need to be taken off the menu.

Try rolling them in melted butter or olive oil; then into seasoned bread crumbs, and baking them....

I like to pan roast canned new potatoes in a little oil at about 350 until the outside is super crispy. This can take a while.

I never notice a can flavor. I'd avoid using them for much else though.

In my opinion canned potatoes are only good for making potato salad.

I USE THE SLICED ONES FOR FRIED TATERS.
DRAIN THEM AND FRY IN A PRETTY HOT PAN WITH BUTTER, SALT AND PEPPER.

THE HOT PAN WILL CRISP THEM ABIT BEFOR THEY TURN TO MUSH BECAUSE THEY ARE ALREADY COOKED.

YOU CAN ALSO ADD ONION AND GREEN PEPPERS, BUT FRY THEM A LITTLE TO TENDERIZE BEFORE MIXING WITH THE TATERS.

Wow! 2 cases, huh? Okay...First, make sure you dump the potatoes you are going to eat in a strainer and rinse them under warm water to get the canning liquid off (I do this will all of my canned vegetables prior to warming).

I found this recipe at http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1950,1451...

OVEN BAKED POTATOES

4 cans whole potatoes
8 oz. sour cream
1/4 lb. butter
Chives to taste
1 med. onion, minced
6 slices bacon, fried and crumbled
3/4 c. shredded sharp cheese
1/4 tsp. pepper

Dice potatoes, fry with butter in skillet until slightly brown. Add sour cream, chives, bacon, onions and pepper. Cover with shredded cheese. Cover and bake at 350 degrees until bubbly, about 30 minutes.

ENJOY :)

I was going through the same thing with rotting potatoes and ended up buying canned potatoes and potato flakes, the potato flakes taste much better but you can salvage the canned potatoes too.

Option 1
Squirt a little lemon or lime juice on the potatoes and then rinse them with cool water, before you cook/heat or eat them, It took away the tinny taste for me.

Option 2

Dump them into a bowl and add a chopped up small onion, the onion will kill the canned taste of the potatoes

Canned potatoes are pretty nasty. IMHO, there's nothing you can do to make them taste good. Super seasoning is the only way.

Wash and dry them well. Add them to your soups and stews so that they will absorb the flavors well.
I have also sliced them and prepared them as I would fried potatoes with bacon and onion and no one has been able to tell the difference.
The only trick is to not over cook them. The only place I wouldn't use them is in a potato salad.

I think you are buying entirely too many potatoes. Why don't you just buy less potatoes so they don't go bad?
As for the canned whole potatoes you already have, I suggest throwing a "Cool Hand Luke" theme party.
Only with potatoes substituted for boiled eggs.

There usually is a 1 (800) number of the company on the label. They usually have a Monday thru Friday 9 am to 5 pm person to answer questions about the product. They should be able to address that and other issues. Be ready to give them the Lot # on the can.

I have used them before...but, I don't remember them having a metalic taste. That might be a problem... metals leaching into food can be toxic in some cases. They might replace them at no cost to you if there is an issue.

steer away from canned food. these are most likely to be junk and GMO's and having heavy metals. They can cause you health problems. It will be more simple to buy fresh potatoes.
