Betty Crocker and Duncan Hines Frosting....?!

Question: which is better tasting?

Answers: which is better tasting?

Ugh! Neither!

I hate canned frosting.

This is the best Buttercream Frosting recipe I've ever found. It was in my Kitchenaid mixer cookbook.

1/3 Cup Butter, softened
1/4 Cup Cream or Evaporated Milk
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1/4 teaspoon Salt
4 Cups Powdered Sugar, divided
Lowfat milk, if needed

Place butter in a mixing bowl and beat on medium speed until creamy. Scrape down sides of bowl; add cream, vanilla, salt and 1 cup powdered sugar. Mix on low for about 1 minute. Scrape down bowl, mix on medium low for about 3 minutes. Scrape down bowl and add the remaining powdered sugar 1 cup at a time, stopping frequently to scrape down the bowl. Once all the powdered sugar is incorporated, check the consistency. If it's too thick to spread, add low fat milk 1 teaspoon at a time, and beat on medium until smooth.

Make enough to frost a 2 layer cake, a 9x13 sheet cake or 24 cup cakes.

You can add cocoa powder if you want chocolate, or any flavor of extract for other flavors. I sometimes substitute Orange Extract and use it to frost a Spice cake...mmmmmmmm.

Betty, but they are both tooooooooooooo fatty.

Ewww...neither. If you are gonna skimp on "homemade" by using a cake mix, make your own frosting.

1/4 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup Crisco
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup milk or cream
4 cups confectionery sugar.

Blend it all up, and it is yummmmy!

Better treat--make a chocolate cake and this icing but add a half teaspoon of mint extract...tastes like Girl Scout "Thin Mint" cookies!

They're both about the same. You can get either the regular or whipped textures. The good thing about them is that they stay fresh in the pantry, after you've opened them. You can put excess frosting between 2 graham crackers, or cookies, and make sandwiches. If you're buying a cake mix, you probably want the same brand frosting, since the flavors are made to exactly match the cakes..... (or get whichever one is on sale)

Either one add a teaspoon of real vanilla flavoring and two tablespoons of milk or cream to make it taste a little more homemade and whip it.
