May be a silly question, but how do you know when corned beef is done?!

Question: I had it in the crock pot for 4 hrs on low, and for an hour on high. Since corned beef stays red when cooked, how do I know when it's safely done enough to eat? Thanks--still learning some of the finer points of cooking here. :)

It is done when it is "fork tender", meaning a fork can be easily inserted into the meat. As far as safe, an hour on high would have taken care of that.

Bert

approx 30 min per lb. or remove from crock pot @ 160' and place in 350' oven for 20-30 min. (I always put my in oven it helps it set up and slice perfectly) if skipping the oven let it rest till it is 170'

Safely done is when the meat is over 160F... but that doesn't mean that it's cooked properly. For corned beef, it needs to cook slowly so the meat becomes tender so the temperature will be much higher.

What you done by using the crock pot is a good way of cooking corned beef. However, you can make it simple on yourself by just cooking 5 or 7 hours on low or about 4 hours on high. No need to worry about switching to high after a few hours.
