Do Lobster feel pain when you boil them.?!

Question: Are they insects?

Answers: Are they insects?

I have read through a lot of these answers and I am really rather surprised at how many people believe that lobsters feel no pain. My undergrad degree is actually in biology, and the simple fact is, a complex nervous system is not required to process sensation, so saying that lobsters cannot feel pain based on the fact that they have a 'simple' nervous system is really rather silly.

If you look at the history of science, scientists also used to believe that vertebrate animals such as dogs, apes, etc. could not feel pain, based on equally silly beliefs, and as a result preformed surgeries, dissections, etc without anasthesia while the animal was still alive. In fact, they used to cut vocal cords in order keep the animal from making noise while they were doing it. This was all with the belief that animals could not feel pain.

I would caution people from making the same assumption about an invertebrate animal simply because their physiology differs from most vertebrate animals. Pain is a pretty basic sensation, and is a good adaptation for survival purposes. It is silly to assume that because an animal may have different physical processes, they are somehow immune to pain.

I would say make use your own ability to observe. An animal generally does not thrash around desperately trying to escape - to the point of self injury - if they are comfortable.

"Bugs" : )

Are Lobsters part of the insect family?
This group is known as the arthropods.
Insects, spiders (arachnids), centipedes/millipedes, and shrimp, lobster, and crabs (crustaceans) are all arthropods hence, we call lobsters bugs.

.......................

The nervous system of a lobster is decentralized and has been likened to that of a grasshopper.

yes how would you feel if someone boiled u. u would feel pain RIGHT

Do lobsters feel pain when you cook them?

The Lobster Institute has received many inquiries about whether boiling lobsters is humane. Being concerned about this important question, researchers conducted experiments and studied the lobster's nervous system. The nervous system of a lobster is very simple – not unlike that of an insect. Neither insects nor lobsters have brains. For an organism to perceive pain it must have a more complex nervous system. Neurophysiologists tell us that lobsters, like insects, do not process pain.

No they are not bugs.
Is the lobster in the cochroach family?
Lobsters, like other crustaceans, insects or spiders, are arthropod, which means that they are invertebrates that have a segmented body and jointed legs. They also have an exoskeleton that they shed (molt) at intervals. Both lobsters and cockroaches are in the Phylum Arthropoda, but lobsters are in the Class Crustacea while cockroaches are in the Class Insecta. So no, a lobster is not an insect, but it is very similar to one in many ways!

That debate has been going on for ages. There was a study back in 2005 funded by the Norwegian government and written by a scientist at the University of Oslo, suggests that lobsters and other invertebrates probably don't suffer even if lobsters do tend to thrash in boiling water.

"Lobsters and crabs have some capacity of learning, but it is unlikely that they can feel pain," the study concluded.

The 39-page report was aimed at determining if invertebrates should be subject to animal welfare legislation as Norway revises its animal welfare law. The report looked at invertebrate groups such as insects, crustaceans, worms and mollusks and summarized the scientific literature dealing with feelings and pain among those creatures without backbones.

It concluded that most invertebrates — including lobsters, crabs, worms, snails, slugs and clams — probably don't have the capacity to feel pain.

So, nobody can say for sure whether or not lobsters feel pain.

Yes they feel pain for about 1 minute or so. I know this because I ask the 2 pounder Lobster that question right before he stop moving in the pot. But the real answer is if you put the lobster in ice or the freezer for about 45 minutes it will slow down his whole thinking process and when you put him in the boiling water then he may only feel pain for about 10 seconds as oppose to not freezing him and feel the pain for a whole minute.

I am a former chef and have cooked over 1000 in my career in the hotel and restaurant business and worked for a seafood retailer, and I have never heard one scream, I did find a suicide note in a box one time, just joking.

If you do boil them put them in head first the heat disorients there brain before they know it they cooked, the only other way is to stick a knife through the shell just an inch south of there eyes and crunch down in half, it look like a t line.

If it really bothers you, putting the lobster in your freezer for a few minutes will put them to sleep - permanently. They won't feel any pain (even if they're capable of feeling pain in the first place) the cold temperature just makes them sleepy as their nervous system shuts down.

Then just drop the newly departed lobster into your pot, cook, and enjoy.

LOBSTERS FEEL PAIN

What arrogance humans have to think that lobsters do not suffer terribly when they are boiled or cut while alive! Yet, many people falsely believe
lobsters "feel no pain" (probably because someone else taught them this bit of insanity). OF COURSE THEY FEEL PAIN!

The reason most people feel uncomfortable cooking and eating lobsters at home is that we KNOW that cutting, boiling or broiling ANYONE alive has got to be excruciatingly painful, involving an intense amount of prolonged suffering. Most humane persons do not want to be the cause of such horrendous animal suffering, so we do not order lobster when dining either in or out.

Some lobster facts from PETA....

"DID YOU KNOW:

? LOBSTERS ARE SENSITIVE BEINGS who cherish their lives and struggle against death. Dr. Loren G. Horsely, an invertebrate zoologist, states
that a lobster has a "sophisticated nervous system" and feels pain when cut or
cooked.

? LOBSTERS CARRY THEIR YOUNG FOR NINE MONTHS and have a long childhood and awkward adolescence.

? LOBSTERS, LIKE DOLPHINS, USE COMPLICATED SIGNALS to establish social relationships.

? SOME LOBSTERS ARE RIGHT-HANDED and some are left-handed. They have been observed walking hand-in-hand, the old leading the young.

? LOBSTERS TAKE LONG-DISTANCE SEASONAL JOURNEYS and can cover 100 miles or more each year.

? LOBSTERS AND OTHER CRUSTACEANS ARE UNHEALTHY TO EAT.

? LOBSTERS CAN LIVE 145 YEARS or longer if they survive the world's most devastating predator - the human being.

? LOBSTERS SHOW COMPASSION TOWARD EACH OTHER. "

Were you aware of these wonderful lobster facts? The lobster industry certainly doesn't want you to know detailed facts regarding the sensitivities, human-like habits and behaviours of lobsters. They ESPECIALLY do not want you to know that lobsters are often highly contaminated with bacteria and pesticide run-off, and are therefore unhealthy to consume.

Next time you see lobster on a menu, just say NO WAY! When you see lobster being offered at a restaurant, ask the owner to stop serving up plates of animal suffering. Tell them you won't dine there until they stop contributing to animal cruelty.

Thank you.

Crustacean.Don't know if they will feel pain but they will react to it.The lobster will start kicking frantically till all the legs drop off and you will end up with a legless lobster. That's is why Chefs kill the lobster first before boiling it . So ,again, I don't know if lobsters fell pain but seeing them struggling in hot water is a painful sight and inhumane, I think.

I am a former chef with 27 years experience. I was trained at the New York Institute of Culinary Arts. I am an educator extraordinaire and have worked at major hotels. I am a certified small kitchen appliance reviewer and am practiced at both Asian and European Cuisines. Believe it or not, I have cooked for the military and in 4 star restaurants. I am a fully trained pastry chef, as well, as well as a saucier. I noticed your little problem and have deigned to help you. I'm sorry. What was the question again?
Oh, yes! Lobsters! No, no pain. They have no brains and complex systems alone can process such feelings.

No, they are not insects. Yes, I think that they do feel the pain of the boiling water.

havn't heard any complaint's YET !
