all purpose flour is for use in whatever - it isn't sifted, or extra fine, etc. but it does not contain anything but flour. so if you need yeast, you have to add it.

you might be thinking of self rising flour. it contains a combination of flour, baking powder, and salt, so that it will rise a little on its own. common in the south, it's good for making biscuits, beer bread, and such. you may even be able substitute it in some recipes when you don't have eggs or yeast. but the final product will be very dense, and is nothing compared to what yeast can give you.

i always like to have self rising flour in my cabinet along with all purpose. you never know when you'll need one or the other.

No, if you need yeast and flour, all purpose flour won't be sufficient by itself.

If yeast is required in your recipe, then you need yeast. All-purpose means just that. Flour that can be used for recipes that call for yeast, without yeast.. etc...

absolutely NOT .... It just means that it's a general, all-use, white flour (as opposed to bread flour, cake flour, wheat flour, etc.)

If you are using a recipe that calls for yeast then you will need to add it.
All Purpose flour doesn't contain yeast, and is good for basic cooking and levening needs.

all purpose flour has no agents added to help foods rise, no yeast, no baking powder, etc...but it is great for items like pie crust because you want crust to be flat and not rise. But you can use it for any baking...just add your rising agents as recipe calls for.

It's your basic white flour that can be used in most recipes.
