Have you tried making suet puddings in the microwave? It cooks in about 3 minutes (depending on the size of the pud and the microwave). It's probably not as good as one steamed for 8 hours, but it's successful. Warning: If you want to make a suet crust meat pudding in the microwave, you have to cook the meat first!
