German Chocolate Cake?!
or is it just the topping
Answers: what do you add into chocolate cake mix to make it "German chocolate Cake" ?
or is it just the topping
I don't think you could achieve a german choc taste from a regular choc cake mix. Like someone else posted, german choc is a totally different, lighter taste.
The "Baker's" brand German Chocolate bar has the recipe for the homemade german choc cake printed inside the package. The cake is fairly involved to say the least. But the final product is delicious!! Now, for a great cheater version. My grandma has made this a family favorite recipe. It sounds totally wierd, but it's awesome! Take a german choc cake mix (Duncan Hines I believe) and mix it according to the directions. Then add in a tub of coconut pecan frosting (the pre-made kind that would normally go with german choc cake). Mix it all together and bake it in a bundt pan. It takes longer than what the box says, but I don't know an exact time. Just keep checking on it. It is SO good!
HTH!
German Chocolate cake is a mild chocolate flavor with the pecan/caramel topping. That's what my Grandpa said. (His parents came here from Germany.)
it got it's name from the brand name of sweet chocolate - called Baker's German Sweet Chocolate. I think buttermilk was also used in the cake mix.
the frosting has pecans and coconut - but that's all I really know about it.
(the cake has nothing to do with Germany)

You can buy a German chocolate cake mix at the store. Mix according to directions on package. The frosting usually used for this cake is a coconut Carmel frosting. You can also get this at the store. Both can be found in the baking isle.
