What should I use instead of Dry Red Wine?!

Question: I am going to make a soup and the recipe asks for dry red wine, what can I use instead? Broth? Beer?

Thanks for the help

Beef broth is the standard substitute for red wine, chicken broth for white wine.

Umm, why can't you use dry red wine? When I saw the question, I thought you might not want alcohol for some odd reason, but then you mentioned beer as an alternative.

But between the two choices, I'd say use beer. It might not taste the same as with wine, but if it's good, you've got a new recipe!

Yes, definitely beer!

Have vinegar?
Use 1/6 vinegar, and dilute with water up to the amount of wine.
Taste (the most inportant tool in your kitchen is your tastebuds!). It won't taste good - it should be tangy, but not enough to change your facial-expression for more than a second.
