The whole business of margarine supposedly being better for you caused me to needlessly saturate my body with trans fat, thinking it was healthier. All that time I sacrificed the flavor of real butter, saving it only for holidays. I wish i hadn't listened. I no longer buy margarine and avoid using it when possible.

Why dear? Do you need "buttering up"??

xx Report It

  • yes i believe so.

    yes

Chemically speaking, I have no real idea....all I know is butter is natural, you make it from milk and the more natural the better in my opinion. Besides unless your gnawing an entire stick of butter for a snack, your not really ingesting that much at a time so worry more about preservative junk food then butter.....

I believe that to be true. The key is to eat a variety of food, and eat your favorite foods in moderation.

Butter is loaded with saturated fat, but Margarine is typically loaded with trans fatty acids, and is a highly processed product with artificial flavors and all kinds of crap in it.

Besides.. butter tastes better! Just don't use it on everything. Olive oil is good, and good for your health. Get into that idea.

Yes. But olive oil is better than either of them.

Margarine usually tops butter when it comes to heart health.

Margarine is made from vegetable oils, so it contains no cholesterol. Margarine is also higher in "good" fats — polyunsaturated and monounsaturated — than butter is. These types of fat help reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol, when substituted for saturated fat. Butter, on the other hand, is made from animal fat, so it contains cholesterol and high levels of saturated fat.

But not all margarines are created equal — and some may even be worse than butter. Most margarines are processed using a method called hydrogenation, which adds unhealthy trans fats. In general, the more solid the margarine, the more trans fats it contains — so stick margarines usually have more trans fats than do tub margarines. Like saturated fats, trans fats increase blood cholesterol and the risk of heart disease. In addition, trans fats can lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol levels.

When choosing a margarine, try to find one with the lowest trans fat content possible and less than 3 grams total of saturated plus trans fats. Manufacturers are now required to list saturated and trans fats separately on food labels.

There are also spreads — such as Benecol and Take Control — that contain phytosterols, natural plant compounds that have been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol levels by 6 percent to 15 percent when eaten in recommended amounts.

They both have about the same calories. Both contain similar saturated and unsaturated fats.

So, the difference comes down to taste and how its made.

I think real butter tastes better, but I really only use it in cooking. I do add some to my potatoes, but don't even butter my veggies.

Also, butter is made from milk...sometimes, salt is added....that's it. So, milk is heathy but butter isn't? I know about butterfat, and they say we should drink skim milk. But, if you don't use alot of butter and don't drink milk, then isn't a little butter now and then about the same as those who drink lowfat milk all day long?

How many artificial ingredients are in margarine? I think the natural is better. I'd rather have cow's milk than refined oil on my toast.

butter is real, margarine is artificially colored and flavored. this should tell you all you need to know. This is a rule of thumb for all foods.

ya i think sooo.......but im not sure

Butter in moderation is not bad for you. One should avoid animal-fat (incl. butter) - especially if you have an elevated cholesterol-level.

Thinking margarine is fine, and using it indiscriminately is WAY more harmful, than using butter, with moderation in mind.

I believe this is what i was taught in health class! well, i believe that margarine is a "fake" version of butter and not quite healthy, but then again butter is under the category of saturated fats. You eat too much, and its not healthy...so in moderation butter, but otherwise i don't know!? You cant do everything healthy, you know? Hope i helped you !

Yes. Margarine is NOT a food, and our body's cannot process it properly.

It ends up in places it should not, like cell membranes, because our body cannot understand what the trans fat is. There are trans fats in lots of things, of course, but margarine is one of the worst. It was first created as a product to sell cheaply to the lower classes. If it were introduced to the public today, the government would not allow it to be sold because our regulations are so much stricter. It isn't even eaten by animals or insects because they know it isn't a food, so you can leave it sitting out safely. Scary, right?

margarine is one chromosome away from being plastic.

butter is more natural...and I think probably more digestible.....

its really not true, what is true is that they both have the same amount o cal. and fat in them so treat your self don't cheat yourself... you might as well have the one that taste the best if they are both fating so go with real butter!!! when its time to work it off, trust me margarine do not work off with less sit ups!!! know what i mean!!! god bless jl

Go by the list of ingredients on the package. I like the fact that butter contains only two: pasteurized cream and salt. Everything in moderation is the key. Try to stay away from anything with the words "hydrogenated" (even partially). It's a man made process of pumping hydrogen into a highly perishable item to give it a longer shelf life but it turns the substance into something our bodies don't recognize and it doesn't know what to do with it, that's why it ends up storing it our arteries where it clogs and causes heart disease and strokes.

Butter doesn't have any artifical ingredients/chemicals and DOES contain small amounts of Vitamin A. However, butter isn't good for cholesterol. Many margarines now are better for people who have to watch their cholesterol.... so, it depends what your health needs are, as to which is better.....

    Hi Sweet Judy,
Yes I think so,but if you are use to eating Margarine and switch to Butter it will taste funny to you, and you will have to get use to the taste. At least I had to..Hehe..
