When making pies why do alot of recipies require lard?!
I replaced the lard with more butter last time, will it have affected the flavour/texture of the pastry at all.
(Its for a savoury Pie)
Answers: Its hard to get half and I would never use the left overs, what more its very unhealthy.

Lard makes the crust flaky. You can use other fats, like butter or shortening. The flavor will vary, but not so much that you would be likely to notice unless you're really paying attention. If you don't want to use lard, use a crust recipe that calls for butter.
lard is good i eat it plain
Lard makes the pie crust flakier. It is still available in grocery stores but I think the smallest quantity you can purchase is one pound.
My cousins use olive oil instead of lard and their pies taste great! I think lard used to all the time in recipes, maybe it's because it's cheap.
Just buy a can of Crisco and keep it in the refrigerator. It will keep that way forever (you will have it for the next time you make a pie). It works just like lard.

Go to allrecipes.com when searching for pie there is an area where you can exclude all recipes congaing a certain item such as :O lard :D
"a lot" is two words not one. Pies are full of fat don't eat them if you want to maintain a healthy life style.
older recipes actually use lard or butter, I use vegetable shortening :)
Butter will be fine if it is for a savory application. I would tend to go with an unsalted butter since what ever your dish is might already contain enough salt and you don't want to add more.
The crust will come out more rich and flakey if useing butter.
because they are trying to make you bigger
A savoury pie should have a lard or shortening crust. Butter is more for the fancy, sweet pies.
weirdly, lard makes the flakiest, most delicious pie crusts.better off with butter, tho.lard will kill ur arteries!!!!
Lard makes the crust much lighter and flakier.....try crisco
For good taste & texture and finished product looks good. Not healthy, though.
