Rice and peas?!

Question: I want to make rice and peas and I've looked for loads of recipes the thing is, when I buy the rice from a takeaway it usually has little sticks of some kind in it. I think they add flavour and the purple colour to the rice along with the peas. Can someone tell me what these are and if poss give me a recipe?

If is Jamaican one, then do this

1 medium sized can red kidney beans
1 can coconut milk
2 cups of rice
1 small onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
1 table spoon oil
1 scotch bonnet pepper (whole, do not chop up)
water

Drain the liquid from the can of beans into a measuring cup and add the can of coconut milk and enough water to make four cups of liquid. Place liquids in a pot with beans, onions, garlic, thyme and oil, bring to a boil. Add rice and stir for a minute. Reduce heat to Medium-Low. Place scotch bonnet pepper on top of liquid and cover tightly for 30 minutes or until rice is cooked. Remove scotch bonnet pepper before serving.

This recipes can also be made using other peas.

With green peas,
Just cook 2 cups of long grain rice with 3 cups of water and a little bit salt and 2 tbs vegetable oil.when rice is done, mix the peas into it.

Why don't you ask them?

the sticks you are talking about are wild rice pieces. you can purchase wild rice in the stores and make it with white rice.
I am not sure what kind of sauce they use but in my rice and peas I use a can of peas with an onion diced finely, celery diced finely, bullion cube and cook them on the stove..add mushrooms at the end if you wish ( I like canned ones but you can use fresh and add earlier) some water to make more of a sauce and some butter...cook down for 5 min and add to white rice.
