Well speaking as a Southern country girl, I LOVE fried okra. Cornbread definitely goes better. You can also serve black eyed peas or butter(lima) beans. Ribs will be fine or you can fix barbeque pulled pork.

Rice goes good, or corn bread. Ribs are perfect.

pork chops... fried of course

ribs and baked beans sound great! Coleslaw might be nice too. If you're having baked beans, and fried okra, cornbread would taste good, but would be too much starch (carbs) ..... Fried chicken with garlic-cheese grits would be good too .... Not necessarily soul food, but very Southern, would be:

FRUIT AMBROSIA
2 c. heavy whipping cream
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. almond extract
1 large can mandarin oranges, drained
2 cans fruit cocktail,drained
about 2-3 c. miniature marshmellows
Optional: 1 to 1-1/2 c. flaked coconut
Whip the cream, sugar & extracts to very stiff peaks. Fold in everything else.... Chill until serving time.....

My Aunt from the south would serve her Fried Okra as a side dish with some good old Fried chicken, Johnny cake (sweet cornbread) and some mash potatoes with hillbilly gravy (bacon drips made into gravy).... Then if you had any room ( which I didn't) a nice peach cobbler...
I be over what time? lol Eat well,

cous cous and grilled chciken. Sooooo good!

hush puppies and/or some blackened catfish

A woman shared a tip with me on what she does with her fried okra. She adds in a diced up and breaded green tomato in with the okra and WOW it is great! As far as sides? I love homemade mashed potatoes and a slice of red ripe tomato. Meat? Fried chicken.
I included a link to 'soul food recipes.
