How can you tell when an egg is rotten and shouldn't be eaten?!
A good egg will sink, usually with the big end bobbing upward. Bad eggs will float.

Answers: If you suspect an egg and don't want to break it to smell, put it in a bowl of water.

If you put it in water and it sinks. Or if you hold it against a light and it is black. OR if it smells baddd. :)
When an egg gets rotten you'll know. It stinks majorly bad you would have to open the windows to vent the house. The fumes are nauseating. Sometimes the egg will rupture on its own.
the smell
Before I use any egg I put each one in a glass of water....if it floats then throw it out.......if it stays on the bottom it is OK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
Trust me - if its rotten you'll know!
If it sinks, it stinks. YUK!!!
I always get mixed up about whether a rotten egg floats or sinks in water- and by the looks of your answers someone else got mixed up too... wish I knew who cus its a helpful tip...
Two ways. Smell it--you will know. Place in water it shouldn't float-meaning it's gone bad and produced gas. Once broken you will know if it's bad. If fried the yolk should hold it's dome shape if really fresh. If it is rotten take back to shop and kick up fuss.
As an egg gets older the air sack at the big end gets bigger. If an egg is really fresh there is virtually no air sack & the egg will sink in a bowl of water. The older the egg gets, the more air is in the sack & the higher it floats. Through out the floaters!!!!
