Ive noticed it down in my area as well.. Its sad how today's society is turning to fast food and instant meals as a source of nourishment and whatnot. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that, but by resorting to fast food etc, the image of family seems to deteriorate. Take it from someone who hasn't really eaten dinner with his family for a long time.. Long story short, people are too busy today.

Maybe they just don't eat pork chops in that family, don't be so quick to judge. I know i don't like pork chops lol.

i agree!!!!! people just dont apprieciate good home made food any more, for most people there dinner comes straight out of the freezer or some sort of packet. its annoying because cooking fresh ingrediants is soooo easy.

I agree, dont be so quick to judge!

I think families have gotten away from cooking meals and sitting down to eat together. What with all the new heat and eat and prepared meals you just warm up and usually the mother has a full time job as well. I enjoy cooking for my family and try to at least 3 to 4 times a week.

Then again the 9 year olds family may not eat pork as the first answer stated.

i don't know but there is nothing like a good home cooked meal. there really has to be something wrong with people that like or have to go out every night to get something to eat.

I think alot of parents are bowing to the pressure of busy days and the traditional dinner setting has been altered.
Personally I love cooking and my children age 8,5 and 4 help with every meal, it also helps keeps the evening structured

Many are too idle to do so. Expensive ready meals and fast food are quick and easy, more's the pity.
Jamie Oliver asked groups of schoolchildren to name some vegetables. a lot of them couldn't name many. Some didn't recognise celery or cucumber. How sad is that.
Ignore the pork chop dig!!!

Hey! I buy fresh stuff and cook it most days. (not tonight though. its going to be frozen pizza and chips)

Unfortunitely many families don't even know what it is like to sit down together for a family meal...a time to talk and enjoy each other as well as a home cooked meal! So true!

Well I think the family dinner is not so common as it used to be but a lot of that has to do with both parents working, long hours, etc. I know in our family we got in a rut where we were all working so late and it would be one form of takeout or another. Lately, though, I have recommitted to family dinner. On the weekend I plan my menu for the week, buy everything and then am better prepared each day to cook. I try to do at least 5 home cooked meals a week. It's going pretty well, but I have to make an effort to make it happen. With so many convenience foods and takeout options, sometimes it becomes easier to do that after a long day of work. I'll tell ya, even though I want to do this, I work a long day then still have a few hours of work with cooking and cleaning up and it stinks sometimes.

It's true, a lot of people don't cook, they just heat up ready-made meals and order take-out. I guess time & energy is a real factor, and also a lot of people just don't know how to cook these days! (now THAT's sad...)
Personally, I love to cook and try my best to cook a proper meal for my family every single day, especially now that we've got kids eating at the table with us! OK sure, there are days when I'll resort to a packet of noodles in sauce, or a can of soup, but it's rarely the entire meal coming from a box - that only happens if we're having a REALLY rough day! (and even then, if I know it's coming I'll just do a slow-cooker meal the night before)
I kind of feel like cooking good healthy food is one of the best ways to show your family your love, and how important they are to you, not to mention the good it does a family to sit down and eat all together every day, and to teach your kids by your own example to to eat cook and eat healthily.

(As for the pork chop thing, maybe they just don't eat them? We rarely eat chops as I much prefer to do pork tenderloin or a small roast... but who knows...)

Cook for your friends and family and let the others suffer! Maybe you should invite those folks over for dinner some night - show them what YOU'RE made of!

It's not easy to cook every night when both parents are juggling work and home life.
The kid is better off not knowing what a pork chop is. Pork is digusting.

As the main cooker in my household, there is nothing I like more than trying new recipes and cooking nutritious, healthy food that tastes good too.

HOWEVER sometimes it doesn't happen. It's not always laziness, I think the big constraint these days is time.. People work very long hours, different schedules, commuting - sometimes just seeing each other is hard enough never mind having a nice dinner together.

I wish it was a bit more like the olden days in that respect - go to work, together time etc. But it's a case where employers demand so much - people have to come home to start working from home again! It's madness. That's where all this snacking comes in.

I agree that home cooking is not as common anymore. In my experience, too many families cater to the childrens' tastes, which creates picky eaters who only want to eat fast foods and prepared foods like chicken nuggets, hot dogs, etc.

In our home we eat home cooked meals more often than not, but as a mom that works part-time and has two school kids involved in activities, sometimes we have to rely on quick-to-prepare frozen meal kits and the like. Luckily, my kids have grown up trying new foods all the time, and are not picky eaters.

As a baker and cake decorating instructor, I find that it is even more true that people do not bake as much these days, which makes me sad. There is nothing like freshly baked breads, cookies, cakes, etc.!

Happy Cooking!

None of my friends except one ever cooks for their family either. I have always cooked for my family. I just love the taste of home cooked food. Nothing else compares. My kids don't eat junk food because I don't buy it. They can't beg you for sweets or junk if you don't bring it home. Because of that, my kids are heathy and make GOOD food choices even when they are away from home. Not one person in my family has a weight problem either and I believe that is because they don't eat the fast foods and junk foods that a lot of families eat. And everyone wonders why the obesity rate is so out of control. Duh! I am NOT a stay at home mom, I work a nine hour day and still cook dinner every night for my family. I get home at 6 and dinner is ready by 7 or 7:30. Twice a week, I use my crock pot so dinner is ready when I get home.Too bad more parents don't do the same because their children will ultimately pay the price for their laziness.

The availability of microwave meals has been part of the downfall of cooking, although the main problem is the increase in 2-income families--no one has the time or incliniation to spend their little free time creating food from scratch..Its very sad...
