Has anyone tried an Ace of Cakes cake? Or heard a review regarding the actual taste or texture? I am skeptical!
Answers: The cakes look amazing, don't get me wrong, but what with leaving the actuals cake out for so long while all the decorating is going on for days, it seems like the cake could be very dry, and the frosting eek I am just not a fan of fondant.
I had a wedding cake from a shop in Vegas that decorates their cakes in the same fashion. The cake was surprisingly good. I think sealing the cake in fondant helps keep it moist. The fondant peels off easily in a thick layer (I didn't like the fondant either,) but the fondant is edible. In competitions the cakes are always judged by taste as well as the other categories, so I think bakeries are careful to make sure their cakes taste good. Look for a place that has a reputation for gourmet quality cake as well as decorating ability.
You can always make your own fondant. Prepackaged fondant and fondant made from those complicated recipes on the stove are all disgusting. You can make your own fondant using marshmallows that tastes divine. You can go to youtube.com and type in "how to make marshmallow fondant". I'm a cake decorator and thats what I use. Theres no peeling off of the fondant with my cakes.
