Is it a southern thing to pronounce paprika, "pa.pu.ri.ka"?!
Answers: Seems on the food network everybody is always saying paperika. Or is this four syllable pronunciation how you're supposed to pronounce it?
Yes.
There's an old joke that Southerners always add extra syllables. "Plate" becomes "Play-it"... "Gate" becomes "Gay-it."
I used to live in South Carolina for years and the Southern drawl has its idiosyncrasies.
The person I don't get is Martha Stewart. She's from the Northeast and she pronounces "herbs" literally with the "H." She pronounces "marinade" as "marin-odd." They obviously tried to break her of these annoying habits on her talk show, but sometimes she still slips up!
You must be watching Paula Deen or Alton Brown. I say Pap-ree-ka.
i'm a yankee living in the south for 6 years now and i will never understand why the talk the way do. makes you wonder how they would teach spelling in school. ya' reckon?
You repeat what you hear. I was in Australia for a while in the military and after a while I was talking just like them. Without even realizing I was until i got back to the states.
Yeah Alton Brown, Paula Deen and Guy Fieri all do it and it drives me nuts LOL
Paprika is pronounced paprEEka in my house
Its just a dialect thing. each region has their own way of saying certain things. I get the creepy crawlies when I hear someone say FOwN- Daaant its fon- dent...well that's the way I say it. lol..we are all different. I mean some people even say mar-jer-reen for margarine.
It's pronounced pap·ri·ka. I'm Hungarian and this is how my family has always pronounced it. Also shown with this pronunciation in the dictionary.
Even my ex husband pronounced it incorrectly. Like pauprika. Drove me crazy.
