Hand held blender is your best bet, but you should be able to put it through a sieve with the help of a spoon, just push with the back of it onto the mesh and tap on the edge of the sieve to help the custard go through.

What about a blender?

Got a metal whisk? Beat it to death - will work but hard work!

add a little bit of milk that you have left and start whisking....either that or use a sieve. its all you can do really sorry.

Hope it goes well

A whisk and a bit of elbow grease!!

Do what my old nan did. Strain it through your vest.

Gets even the smallest lumps out.

.

If its for a trifle,it doesn't really matter provided they aren't dry lumps, but the only answer iis to sieve it,or you could try putting it in a blender for a few seconds,I don't know what else to say.

For this time I can't help but next time you make custard use the microwave method, custard never goes lumpy when made in a microwave oven.

use water to thin it down and you can thicken it after you get rid of the lumps.try mixing the custard into the milk before it boils

Exactly what Sal*UK said.. Metal wisk.. and wisk it until you can't feel your hand, arm, elbow..

Blender is too fast and won't give a good result

If all else fails strain the custard thru a clean pair of tights(messy but very effective)

Put it through a seive it will work OK and just press the lumps through the seive and that should work a treat.

As you now have lump free custard, I won't answer your question exactly but I'll give you a tip for not getting lumpy custard.

I'm assuming that you use powdered custard?
When I make custard I allways pour a bit of cold milk into the powder and stir that until a thick, smooth liquid is made then I stir continuously while pouring the hot milk in. So far I have never had lumpy custard.

Enjoy your party, can I have some trifle, I adore trifle!

Sieve- it always works for me and failing that!!!!
.............open a can from the nearest shop !!!
failing that just have jelly with fruit and a good jug of cream by the side! We are not kitchen goddesses all of the time!

sorry i missed this but you've already solved it.
