you can replace the oil with applesauce, this will give you a moist cake with less calories, that also has a very slight fruity taste, it's good!

yes butter is better

Yep you sure can!

For the chocolate, you can fill it halfway, then use kind of a cheesecake mixture (cream cheese, sugar egg) as a spoonful in the middle. Can also put mini chocolate chips in the middle.

For vanilla, try using pineapple juice instead of the water, and putting in crushed pineapple and coconut for a pina-colada kind of thing. Can add cream of coconut too

Or add mini frozen blueberries.

Or marble the two mixes together in the wrapper.

Adding pudding is good too - try something unusual like pistachio or butterscotch; instant of course, and a 3oz box to each box of cake mix.

Pudding is always a great easy add in to a cake recipe, or with the chocolate cake mix, try chopped up marachino cherries, kinda like a black forest thing.

Yes you can replace oil for butter or applesauce for oil, whatever the specific recipe calls for you can always substitute something when it comes to the liquid part...

I have heard of adding sour cream but I dont know how much to add, sorry.

Make the cupcakes as usual. When they are cooled, make some buttercream frosting and put in a plastic baggie. Cut the tip off and insert it into the cupcake-filling it with about 1-2T of frosting, then frost the top!
