Depends on how sunny your kitchen is. I once grew cherry tomatoes in my dining room window (inside)--gets full blown afternoon sun all afternoon until sunset--in a medium size plastic garbage can (well, it was 2 cans just to make it sturdier, drilled holes in the bottom for drainage, put a very large and deep catch bowl under it too). I read all about caring for tomato plants, how and when to fertilize, how much water they need (and best time to do the watering). I also had a grow/plant light so it could get enough light on the grey and foggy days. I had a nice crop of little tomatoes and the plant kept producing into winter--vines looked ratty but kept putting out tomatoes that would get ripe. Enough sun is key though, as well as enough (but not too much) water, adding specific fertilizer. Supposedly, you can even grow tomatoes hydropontically (haven't tried that).
