How many quarts is a "medium saucepan"?!
- An 8 qt stock pot
- A 3 qt sauce pan
- A 1.5 qt sauce pan
- A 12'' everyday pan (that can be used like a frying pan and also easily put in the oven)
- An 11'' cast iron griddle or frying pan
Recipes often seem to ask for a medium saucepan. What size would you consider to be iconic, or standard, for a medium saucepan? How many quarts?
Similarly, what would you consider "large," and what would you consider "small?"
Do you think that 8, 3, and 1.5 will cover most of my needs?
Thank you for your time,

Answers: Hello, seasoned cooks! I'm attempting to build a minimalist kitchen for my first apartment, starting from scratch. What would you consider to be the essential sizes for pots and pans? I've been thinking about getting:

I think your list sounds adequate. I find a small skillet about 7-8" very useful, especially if only cooking for one or two. I agree the medium saucepan 1.5-2 quarts. Happy cooking!
medium about 1.5 quart
2 qts is a medium small so figure that
My medium is 2qt, so go between the 1.5 and 3qt depending on what you are making. Good Luck!
