Shortcake gets it's name from the adding of shortening or butter to a dough which makes it tender. Calling a baking lard or fat shortening comes from the term "to shorten" a 15th century term which meant, "easily crumbled".
its because the cake itself is high in fat and that is called shortening. the high ammount of shortening used in it to make it is why they gave it the name. its very good though
Falco and Clare are right. Shortening is thus called because the "fat" is used to "shorten" the "strings" of proteins in the flour to make it tender, light and flakey instead of leaden. The classic shortcake is just fancied up bisquit dough with added sugar. Similar to a scone, but no dried fruit or nuts. This method for short cake is our family favorite...rather than angelfood, sponge or pound cake. We love the crisp textures of the outside of the cake with the cloudy insides that soak up all the strawberry juice...oh man, that will just have to be dessert tomorrow! In South Texas, the berries are just starting to come in...Poteet has its festival this weekend. I can't go, but my friend is bringing me two flats of the best berries around....just something about their flavor! Wish I could share...
i think its probably because one ofthe ingredients in it is shortening which is wot gives it that nice melt in the mouth texture.
Probably because they're little, and short:) ... alot of people actually use biscuts for them, or those short little Angel-Food cake (no lard, not much shortening) tartlet shells....
