UK substitute for vegetable shortening to make a pie?!

Question: UK substitute for vegetable shortening to make a pie!?
I've got an American recipe for apple pie and it has vegetable shortening in it to make the crust!. I can't find vegetable shortening in the UK - is Trex or a solid vegetable fat a good substitute!? Any other suggestions!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Trex is fine!. It is a pure vegetable fat and makes perfect pastry!. Use it all the time!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Atora Vegetable suet is the best!. !. It comes in a green box!. The regular atora suet comes in a blue box!. Just add flour and water they usually have recipes in the pack!. You can buy it in all good british supermarkets!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Any solidified, partially hydrogenated fat is technically shortening!.

If you can find non-hydrogenated lard I would use that instead!. It makes a much better crust and does not have chemically manufactured trans-fat!. Neither lard nor hydrogenated oil are good for you, but lard is the lesser of two evils!.

You could also use palm oil/palm kernel oil if you can find it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Trex and White Flora make fantastic pastryWww@FoodAQ@Com

Any kind of fat will do!. Lard, margarine etc will all be suitable/Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vegetable shortening is just a solid fat derived from plant sources, originally it is in the (liquid) oil form and it gets solidified through hydrogenation!. Not healthy since this process creates a lot of trans fats!.

So any vegetable solid fat would do though I much prefer butter or at times lard for better taste and for avoiding trans fats!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I also use lard !.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My British neighbour taught me to make the best pie crust using lard!. 1 cup flour to 1/3 cup lard plus salt, milk etc!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If I don't have shortening, I substitute butter or margarine!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
