Question: I want to make some instant couscous!.Can I substitute the olive oil with more water!?
I want to make the dish without the additonal calories of the oil!. Any suggestions!? Would water work!? Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!Www@FoodAQ@Com

The olive oil is partially there for flavor and also to keep the granules from sticking together!. The pasta doesn't actually absorb the oil, it absorbs the water and the oil coats the pasta!. You don't need to add more water to compensate!. I just use the water!. I usually add some herbs or a boullion cube or use broth instead of water to add flavor without adding calories!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No--If you don't have the olive oil, just wipe pan with paper towel with a little vegetable oil in order to fry fresh veggies!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You don't really need the olive oil!. I use chicken or beef broth instead of water for extra flavor!. I also like to throw in a store bought trail mix consisting of dried fruits and nuts to really make it great tasting!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You didn't mention what brand you were using, but in general, most couscous is fine with just water!. I think in this case, they ask for oil to help keep it from sticking together!.

The general rule is 1 1/2 cups of boiling liquid to every cup of couscous!. Pour the couscous in a bowl (I prefer a glass bowl so I can see what's going on)!. Pour over 1 1/2 cups boiling water or stock, cover the bowl tightly with a fitting plastic lid, a dinner plate or cling wrap and let it sit undisturbed for 10 minutes!. Then remove the cling wrap and fluff with a fork!.

You can then add anything else you like to it, though if you're adding dried herbs or fruit, I'd recommend putting them in before you add the stock or water to the dry couscous!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
