How do you prepare a good turnip side dish?!
I had a WONDERFUL lamb dish with a side of carrots and turnips when I was in Colombes, Frances!. It looks like they steamed or boiled the turnips and then diced them!. Is that a good way to prep!? Is it easy!? (I didn't realize I LIKED turnips!)!.
What kind of spices would you use (nothing TOO spicy, please)!.
Thanks!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I don't know what kind of turnips you had, yellow or white!. Anyway we have the best white turnips on Cape Cod!. They are famous Eastham turnips and I think it has to do with the soil!. Here we mash them and add a little sugar!. We also have a turnip festival in the fall, you should come!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I love turnips and rutabags!.!.!.!. I either mash them (like potatoes), or peel & dice them and simmer in boiling water until just soft!. Then drain them, add butter & salt & chopped parsley (maybe a little pepper), and stir just until the butter is melted and coats everything!.!.!.!.!. There's a slightly peppery taste to turnips, so you don't need alot of seasoning:) !.!.!. btw: I do the same thing with Yukon Gold or red potatoes too, and they're my daughter's favorite potatoes!Www@FoodAQ@Com
I make the large turnips, the yellow flesh ones in the microwave oven!.They are very hard to peel and cut so I cook them first!.
5-6" diameter turnip!. They are waxed, but ignore this!.
Place turnip on a folded paper towel on a Styrofoam plate in the microwave- cover with a paper towel or wax paper!.
Set microwave on high for 10 minutes!. and start
When finished turn upside down cover with paper towel again and cook for 10 more minutes!.
When done wrap in a piece of foil and let sit 10 minutes!.
After letting sit, open foil and peel with a knife--the skin just about falls off-- it's hot ,so be careful!. You can now slice in two directions making cubed or diced turnip!.
Very good if you drip melted margarine over hot turnip!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

there are so many things to do with turnips, most of them polite!
try cutting them into chunks and putting them in the microwave in a little tiny bit of water long enough for them to be mashable (why microwave!? because you don't want to boil the nutrients out of them!) and then mash them!. cook them the rest of the way in a saucepan in a little milk and butter, with some lemon pepper and garlic salt!.
or dice them (again, you may have to soften them up a bit first by nuking them with that tad water) and then sautée them in a little oil with some miso paste (either color), chopped or minced garlic and some fresh green beans!.
or make a mild curry by sticking a LOT of spinach in the blender with some cocoanut milk and curry powder, and simmering it for a LONG time (use a slow cooker if you have one) with diced turnips and cubes of soft white cheese!.
that's just off the top of my head, but the rest of me is suddenly quite hungry!. gotta go!

Ok this is how my mother and grandmother fixed turnips!. Slice the turnips into disc like shapes!. Medium thickness!. But some water into a saucepan!. Add some salt pepper butter and some bacon grease into the water!. Add the turnips and let them simmer until they are fork tender!. Drain the water of and eat!. I like to add a little more salt and pepper to them myself before eating but you don't really need to!.
I know the bacon grease sounds gross and it isn't the healthiest thing to do!. But it adds such a good flavor to the turnips!.
I have some in the fridge right now!. They sound so good I my have to fix them for dinner sometime this week!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
