How can you make Catsup?!
Hi, I was wondering can you make catsup at home and what is the difference between this and ketchup or sauce!?!?!?
I live in Australia and aren't 100 per cent sure whether we have catsup down here!?

Heinz-like Ketchup
1 6oz can tomato paste
? cup light corn syrup
? cup white vinegar
? cup water
1 tbsp!. Sugar
1 tsp!. Salt
? tsp!. Onion powder
1/8 tsp!. Garlic powder
Combine all ingredients in saucepan over medium heat!. Bring to boil, reduce heat and simmer 20 minutes!. Remove from heat!. Cover until cool!. Place in lidded container in refrigerator!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yes you can make catsup at home but you need a very heavy pot and all day!. At-least that's how my mother-in-law use to do it!. I know she put tomatoes,vinegar,salt in heavy pot and cook slowly until tomatoess were very soft and easily mushed!. You they take this mixture threw a strainer to remove tomatoe skins!. Put back in pot and add sugar!. Stirring constantly cook until thickened!. You can add Tabasco sauce or any other spices you like to make different flavored catsup!. It takes quite awhile to cook this and you have to stir or it will stick and burn!. Store in the fridge about one monthWww@FoodAQ@Com
OLD FASHIONED GREEN TOMATO CATSUP
2 medium heads of cabbage
4 medium onions
5 large pods of hot red peppers
5 lb!. sugar
1 c!. salt
5 gallon bucket of green tomatoes
1 1/4 gal!. vinegar
1/2 jar (1!.25 oz!.) whole pickling spice
Grind onion, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage!. Put in sack or new clean pillow case with 1 cup salt and let drain overnight!.
Next day, put 1/2 box spice in a rag, put in large cooking pot and cook 4 hours, adding vinegar and sugar as needed!.
Put in hot canning jars, screw band on tight!.

9 lb!. tomatoes, peeled and quartered
4 sweet green peppers, seeded and quartered
4 lg!. onions, quartered
Put in blender 3/4 full!. Blend at high speed until liquified!. Pour into large kettle or electric roaster!. Repeat until all vegetables are blended!.
1/2 tsp!. hot red pepper
3 tsp!. salt
1 1/2 tsp!. allspice
3 tsp!. dry mustard
1 1/2 tsp!. cloves
1 1/2 tsp!. cinnamon
Tied loosely in spice bag!.
3 c!. vinegar
3 c!. sugar
Simmer uncovered until catsup is reduced to 1/2 or desired consistency!. Remove spices and pour into hot jars!.

In my opinion, you don't!. The ketchup companies don't charge enough for their product!. I used to can homemade ketchup, and although the taste is far superior, it takes approx 4 bushels of tomatoes just to yield a few pints! Like bottled gold! lolWww@FoodAQ@Com
Catsup is the English, as opposed to American spelling of ketchup, although the original word has gone out of fashion somewhat!.

Do a taste test!.
It will cost you less than buying all of the ingredients and taking all of the time to make it!.

First ingredients are tomatoe and sugar!. and then preservatives, salt!. So its basically blended tomatoes with a touch sugar!. *mamatxWww@FoodAQ@Com

1 gallon tomato pulp
2 cups sugar
2 cups vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
2 tablespoons salt
Make tomato pulp from cooked tomatoes, that have been put through a sieve!. Boil hard for 1 hour!. Then add 1 heaping tablespoon cornstarch dissolved in a little water!. Boil another half hour!. Bottle and seal!.
*Apple Catsup
4 c Unsweetened apple sauce
1 ts Ginger
1 ts Cinnamon
1 ts Cloves
1 ts Mustard
1 ts Onion flavoring
2 ts Salt
2 c Vinegar
1 ts Pepper
Combine all ingredients!.
Simmer slowly until thick!.
*Catsup
1/2 gallon ripe tomatoes
1 1/2 c cider vinegar
1/2 c brown sugar
1/3 c salt
2 tsp dry mustard
1 tsp powdered ginger
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp cayenne pepper
Press the tomatoes through a fine sieve, making a thick juice!.
Add the other ingredients to the tomato juice, mix, bottle, and let stand!.
Ready immediately, but tastes richer if let to sit for a day!.
If you want a thicker sauce, simmer and reduce the tomato puree before adding the other ingredients!.
*Green tomato catsup
1 peck green tomatoes
6 large sweet green peppers
6 large red sweet peppers
1 large head cabbage
12 medium onion
2 hot peppers
3 lb apples
4 lb sugar (more if desired)
Pickling spice to taste
Vinegar
1/3 c salt
Grind tomatoes, red and green sweet peppers; mix together!. Add salt!. Put into sack and hang securely on clothesline to drain!. Drain until juice is almost clear!. Grind cabbage, onion, apples and hot peppers; mix together all ingredients adding sugar, pockling spice, and enough vinegar to cover!. Bring to a boil and boil 20 minutes!. Seal in dry jars!.
