What's the best way to adjust recipe instructions based upon how much you have or how much you want?!

Question: What's the best way to adjust recipe instructions based upon how much you have or how much you want!?
For example, if a recipe calls for 3 eggs and I've only got 2 eggs can I scale back all the other ingredients (flour, sugar, baking soda) by 1!.5!? Or if I want twice the number of servings, can I just double everything!?

How can I take cooking temperatures or times into account!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
You can always calculate things to make a recipe with what you have!. I wouldn't recommend it though!. If you need 3 eggs and 1 cup water, then use 2 eggs and 2/3 c!. water!. But you do have to do this with everything!. And, it's always easier to adjust to doing more!.!.!.such as a double batch!. Temperatures usually can stay the same!. Watch your cook times!. Just because you do a double batch doesn't necessarily mean you'll need to cook it 40 mins instead of 20 mins!. When you change a recipe, keep an eye on the food and visually check when it will be done!. Cooking is not an exact science!. You learn technique, flavor and quality as you go along!. You can experiment, substitute, and make whatever you want!. Good luck!Www@FoodAQ@Com

When it comes to baking!.!.!.!.you should never fool around with the amounts and ingredients, unless it isn't important to the leavening (like nuts, chocolate chips!.!.flavour extract)

things like flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, yeast, milk, eggs and butter all are important in the end result of the baking!.!.!.the texture, taste, colour and volume might be affected if you change any of these

sometimes you can omit an egg yolk and use the white,or use applesauce instead of fat!.!.!.but in my experience it never produces the same result!.

I would try to find a recipe that only has 2 eggs!.!.!.!.google it and you are bound to find one that works for you!Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you keep proportions the same then you should be ok!. The baking time will be less however!. For example, if you were baking brownies in a 9 * 13 * 2 inch pan, using 1/3 less will make for a thinner brownie that will cook quicker!. if I made 1/3 less, I would use a pan that is 1/3 smaller!. The baking time will still be slightly less but not to the extent of my prior example!.

Lastly, when making adjustments like this, always keep the temperature the same and adjust the time (more or less) as needed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Everything can be easily adjusted!.!.!. however, some recipes may require small amounts of a certain ingredient that may be difficult to get the right amount!. Just keep everything in proportion!. You can do as you said with the eggs and times everything by 1/3!. Cooking tiimes will very depending on the cooking method and the food!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A lot of recipes say not to do that, but I, on the other hand, always do and it always works for me! I figure out the new measurements of all my ingredients (like if I have only 2 cups of oats and I need 3 cups, I use 2/3 of all of my ingredients) and it does, in fact, work!.

If you're wanting to, say, put more biscuits in the oven, then don't mess with the time or temperature!. If you want to make a giant cake instead of a small cake, I can't help you there!. I would assume you'd want the same temperature but longer cook time, but I don't really know!. I've never tried it!. If you want to put two cakes in the oven instead of one, the temperature should stay the same, but you may want to keep them in a slight bit longer!. Remember, check by inserting a toothpick and if it comes out clean, it's ready!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
