This recipe is driving me batty?!


Question: This recipe is driving me batty!?
I am trying to get all the items together that I need to make this stew!. In my cookbook it says to "Hop potatoes into even pieces"!.
I have no idea where to go from here!. Should I just leave the potatoes out!? I am so desperate I seriously considered "hopping" over them, but I would feel stupid AND I feel sure that that is the wrong way to go anyhow!.
If you have advice/options and have made stew before and can tell me the next step, *)pretty soon cos I need to start cooking in like a couple of hours(*, I would be appreciative!.

Oh I see what the problem is! They forgot the "e" after "hop"!. You're actually supposed to "hope" the potatoes into even pieces!. This is obviously a technique used in the most advanced of cooking!. You need to stare at the potatoes and hope they fall apart evenly!. Then sit back and wait for divine intervention!. The Lord is not only our saviour, but our Sous Chef as well!. I hope you have already prepared your meat!.!.!.Unless you are doing a veggie stew!. It's simple add tomatoes, onions and potatoes ( I cut my potatoes into cubes) to a precooked meat!.It should have a good beef stock!. If not you can use a beef broth !.Works well for me!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

relax cooking is supposed to be fun! yes it is chopped potatoes!. I have been cooking for 25 years and I have to be honest never hopped a potatoe in my life!.!.!. just thinking about hopping a potato makes me giggle wheeeeeeeeeeWww@FoodAQ@Com

Let me ask how you got the recipe!.!.!.!.you say it's in a cookbook!.!.!.!.and not copied!.!.!.so my guess is that it's a misprint!.

HOP is probably "CHOP potatoes into even pieces"!.

The only reason the potatoes need to be in even pieces is so that they cook evenly!. With a medium to large potato, peel them or don't peel them (however you prefer)!. Cut them in half lengthwise then cut each half lengthwise again!. Take that and cut into thirds or fourths depending on how big the potato is!. Usually big enough to stab with a fork (if you are making a stew)!.

They don't have to be exact just approximately the same size!.

Good luck!. PS (you can leave the potatoes out too if you like)!.!.!.though the "liquid" you cook the stew in may be a little bit "runnier" than it would be with the potatoes!. Usually with or without potatoes you still have to thicken the liquid a bit before you serve it!.

The beautiful thing about stew is anyone can do it!. There are thousands of ways to prepare it and cook it!. The two most important things to remember is that your cooking the meat (first and foremost) and your cooking the vegetables as you would with any other dish!. Install them in timelines! If your potatoes or other vegetables are over cooked, they wll be mush and your stew is a failure!. So the trick is to install everythng as if it were it's own seperate recipe dish!.

One example is a 4 hour stew!. It takes a descent sized roast 3-4 hours to begin the tendering process!. The meat is safe to eat and has been for quite some time!. Now what your trying to achieve is meat that is tender and not chewy like bubble gum!. You could cook it for 12 hours and still not achieve your desired tenderness!. It depends on size, temperature, cut, quality, etc!. It just varies!. With roasts, it's always better to overcook them, then it is to undercook them!.

Install veggies in timelines based on what their normal cooking times would be!. Potatoes take the longest so put them in!. Then carrots!. Then celery!. Then onions!. Then whatever other veggies, beans, meats or pastas you like in your stew!. But theres never a reason you need to put them all in at once (beyond popular belief)!. You want your potatoes to maintain a little texture!. But at the same time you dont want your carrots to be mush!. So install them as if you were cooking each one seperatley!. That's the trick to a good stew!.

Onions are the exception!. They are a marinade for the beef!. You can just cut an onion in half and throw it in if you want a marinade!. Then when your almost done and want to apply celery, apply the desired onion size you want people to bite into!. They both take about the same amount of time to cook!.

Have fun with stew!. There is no law that says you have to make it in any particular way!. With a little creativity and the ability to learn from your previous mistakes, you could make the best stew known to man!. Everywhere I've traveled around the globe, I have seen many recipe techniques for making stew / roast!. Just have fun with it and do what you think you would like!. You might just amaze yourself!
