The other answer missed the BUTTER!. Soften a stick of REAL butter (not margarine), whip with a mixer and then add a teaspoon of vanilla and mix good!. Add 4-5 cups of powdered sugar 1/2-1 cup at a time, mixing well after each addition, Then add milk a teaspoon at a time until light and fluffy!. I bake and decorate cakes to sell and this is my best seller!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting

Makes enough for one 2-layer 9-inch cake or 2 dozen cupcakes*

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
6 to 8 cups confectioners’ sugar
? cup milk or less, depends upon thickness desired
2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Place the butter in a large mixing bow and beat until fluffyl!. Add 4 cups of the sugar and then half the milk and vanilla!. On the medium speed of an electric mixer, beat until smooth and creamy, about 3-5 minutes!. Gradually add the remaining sugar, 1 cup at a time, beating well after each addition (about 2 minutes), until the icing is thick enough to be of good spreading consistency!. You may not need to add all of the milk!. If desired, add a few drops of food coloring and mix thoroughly!. (Use and store the icing at room temperature because icing will set if chilled!.) Icing can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

1 stick no trans fat Crisco
3 T water
1 T pure vanilla extract (or clear vanilla flavoring if you want the icing bright white)
1 lb (or about 4 cups) of pure confectioner's sugar

Add more water and/or flavoring to get the consistency you want, but don't add too much!. It should be nice and spreadable, not too stiff!.

Whipped Cream Frosting

COOK UNTIL THICK:
1 cup milk
4 TBLS!. Flour
set aside to cool

BEAT:
Together…!.3 minutes
? cup margarine
? cup shortening (Crisco…NOT cooking oil)

ADD:
1 cup sugar
(1/4 cup at a time, beat thorouhly)
1 tsp!. Vanilla

ADD :
Gradually add flour & milk mixture

BEAT:
Until the consistency of
