A salamander oven is what chefs put your prepared plate in to quickly warm it up, or to melt cheese on something, it is long and skinny like a salamander and most only have a 6-8 inch opening!. Theres a rack inside that holds the dishes and when you place the dish on it, the dish pushes the rack down and turns the heat on!. Sort of like a long skinny toaster oven!.

All answers above correct, but there is another salamander, it is a long piece of steal that bends at the end and seems to have a hockey puck attached to it!. It was generally heated until hot and used to melt cheese or caramelize the sugar on creme brulee!. If you watch Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, season 3 "La Parra de Burriana," you can see the inexperience of the staff with the salamander!. I included a website with a picture of one!.

These are all correct, however, watch out when grabbing something out of them!. I have lines down my arms just past my wrists from burning them on the ledges!. Oh and watch how long you keep stuff in there, although catching cheese on fire is fun your boss doesn't seem to find the humor in it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
