Like all animals, humans would have had the instinct to eat something!. As far as learning what to eat, we're intelligent observers of the world!. I'm sure we saw what other animals ate, and decided to try it ourselves!. Oysters, for example!. Who would have thought those strange things that look like lumpy rocks would be edible!? But we would have seen birds and other animals breaking them open and eating them!.

Here's a good discussing the origins of cooking:

"The oldest generally-accepted evidence for controlled use of fire by humans dates to around 700,000-800,000 years ago and is from the site of Gesher Benot Yaacov in Israel!. There are claims for earlier use of fire dating back to 1!.4-1!.8 Million years ago from sites in East and South Africa, but these are somewhat less convincing, -isolated burnt bones or burnt sediment patches that could just as well be results of natural fires!.

Current thought on the main evolutionary benefits of cooking plant foods is that exposure to heat can break up toxins (many of which have long molecular chains) that make some foods difficult for humans to digest!. Cooking can also make hard foods softer (e!.g!., tubers), allowing for easier chewing and digestion!. Cooking meat also kills bacteria and parasites!.

Among paleoanthropologists, the most popular theory about the origin of cooking is that it was linked to selective pressure for enlarged brains among younger hominins!. The brain is an expensive tissue and increasing the quantitiy and quality foods available to juveniles may have enabled those among them with a genetic propensity to encephalization (developing large brains) to realize their potential!. Undoubtedly it was more complicated than this, but that is the short version!. Fire is also useful in keeping potential predators at bay, particularly at night, and it is conceivable that early hominins started messing around with fire for defense long before it ever occurred to them to cook anything!. i think the cave man used to be eating raw meat, however they will have to think of a way to keep food from turning bad, dehydration may be known from sun dried meat leftover or by accident, people are lazy therefore they will think of a short cut to dry their meat faster or when there is rainy days!.
What type of food to choose first observe animal and by trial and error!.Like some plant is poison while some can be use as medicine or food!. Man try most of the plants first by looking at the plant if the plant(Or animal) is colorful it may be poisonous, smell funny may be also poisonous, but some people will still proceed on by first rubbing the leaf on skin like on the arm, observe if OK then rub a little beside the mouth, still no problem taste a little if OK consume more and etc!. Some thing like begin a Guinea pig!. But don't try!. many people should have die from these testing!.People learn rom mistake and it is a long process!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
