Sodas in Cakes in the 1950s....WHY??!

Question: Sodas in Cakes in the 1950s!.!.!.!.WHY!?!?
I own an extensive collection of old cookbooks!. I've bought them over time and am really just starting to read through them!. I've noticed that in the 1950s era!.!.!.!.!.it seemed VERY popular to put a soda like 7Up in a cake or other things!.!.!.!.WHY!?!? Especially in cake!?!?

I don't think it's particularly odd!. I'm just wondering if there are any benefits!.!.!.!.!?!?

And could you do the same with a Coke!?!? Were the recipes for that, too!?!?

HAVE any of you ever HAD a soda cake!?!? Was it good!?!? Please let me know!!

THANKS!! :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

I was a kid in the 50's and remember it as a very gimmicky era!. The idea of quick recipes were popular and using strange ingredients together!. The idea of putting soda like Coke in a cake or cherry soda in Jello or baking a ham in Coke was big at the time!. The idea was for it to be FUN cooking!. Stoves were pink or blue and barbecuing had just come in!. Like I said it was a goofy era for cooking!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yeah, the soda makes it light and fluffy as well as adding a sweetness to it!. The soda also acts as a substitute to baking powder and bicarb soda (required for things to rise by the reactions between ingredients releasing gas bubbles hence fluffy things)!.

The best recipie for scones i have ever come across is one with cream, flour and lemonade!. It's absolutely brilliant!.

Not sure about the coke though!. The trick with lemonade is that it only adds sweetness, the coke would add flavour which may be a bit strange in a doughy thing!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Supposedly the soda fizz made the cake lighter and fluffier!. I'm not sure if this was chemically 'real' or not, but it was very novel at the time!. Soon on the heels of these 'soda cakes' was the 'dump cake'!. It's easily googled for a recipe, and I make them still to rave reviews!. They're soooooo easy :) I've had a grocery store soda cake, and it was good, but not especially different from any other 'creme cake' that i could discern!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

i've had a 7up cake before and it was SOOOOO good!.

i think that it was extremely moist!.!.!.!.!.!.but i dont know if that was because of the soda or not!. but it was great!.

you should try to make it!.

the one i had was store bought though!.!.!.!.!.but if you are a good baker im sure it will come out great!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I use soda bicarbonate with yogurt+1 pinch salt of lemon!. It's equal to baking powder!. Really!
I made some cakes with lemonade, too!.Stop, you mean soda water or 7up, I mean soda bicarbonate!.But lemonade = 7up, because of fizzy!. Taste are very good!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Where I'm from 7up cakes are very popular!. It's actually my favorite cake!. I think it makes the cake super moist!. Every one I've ever eaten certainly was!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Makes a cake moisture!.

Quick - Simple - E-Z

Here are a few "Cola" recipes!.

NO EGGS, NO OIL, NO WATER !.!.!.!.!.!.!.JUST 1 12oz!.SODA AND MIX!.

ORANGE CAKE MIX…!.ORANGE SODA
PINEAPPLE MIX…!.PINEAPPLE SODA

POUR CAKE MIX IN BOWL
ADD SODA USE LOAF CAKE PAN
BAKE 350 DEGREES AS BOX SAYS!.

Your choice of frostings or use cool whip!.

COLA CHICKEN
(And more variations of recipe)
(My favorite!.!.!.!.Wings & Ribs!.!.!.ummm goood)

4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1 cup catsup
1 12oz!. can cola (pepsi, coke, etc!.)

Put chicken in a non-stick pan!.
Mix together catsup and cola, pour over chicken!.
Bring to a boil!. Cover, reduce heat and cook 45 minutes!.
(turning chicken a few times, while cooking!.!.!.to prevent from
sticking to pan)
Uncover, turn up the heat and continue to cook until the sauce
becomes thick and adheres to the chicken!.
It turns into the most incredible BBQ sauce!. Yummmm!

You can double the recipe and use more pieces of
chicken!.!.!.!.wings!.!.!.would be ideal!.!.!.add some hot
sauce!.!.!.!.presto "Hot
Wings"!
I have used Ribs, just as good!.

I tried this recipe with 'meatballs'!.!.!.!.was equally
as good!.!.!.served over rice!.

I found another variation!.!.!.!.!.omit the catsup and add a small
jar of Salsa (any variety)!.

I have tried using Salsa (omitting the catsup!.!.!.!.not)!.
You'd think a recipe with only '3' ingredients couldn't be
messed up!.!.!.!.wouldn't you!?!?
Well!.!.!.while I was preparing to fix the 'Cola Chicken' recipe
using Salsa!.!.!.!.!.I was also trying to carry on a conversation with my
husband!.!.!.(just proves!.!.!.I can't do two things at once)!.!.!.!.mixed
Salsa & Catsup (before I realized I was supposed to leave out
the catsup) & Cola!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.still turned out really tasty (to me)!.!.!.might
be a little sweeter than some of you like!.

I fixed chicken wings, (using the above recipe)
but!.!.!.I added the spices from a MILD (I don't care for "HOT") Buffalo Wings packet!.!.!.(the kind you get to bake in the oven)!.!.!.!.!.I thought it was really good!.!.!.!.!.(but you/I can't find a 'bad' way to fix chicken)!.

Finally!.!.!.!.!! I fixed the 'SALSA' chicken!.!.!.!.!.!.that's good , too!.

Another (bright)idea!.!.!.!.!.I thought of trying!.!.!.!.!.!.replace the
catsup with a bottle of Shrimp Cocktail Sauce!.!.!.and add a bag of (pop corn) shrimp!.!.!.!.!.!
Fixed the shrimp with cocktail sauce!.!.!.!.!.!.eh!.!.!.wasn't all that
great!.!.!.was OK!.!.!.probably won't be fixing it again!.

also tried beef stew cuts!.!.!.!.!.!.that was pretty good!.!.!.!.!.I can see
myself making this again!.
Served both over rice!.!.!.!.!.think the stew cuts would have been just as
good over noodles!.

How about using the little cocktail weiners/sausages!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
