Question: Why did my BBQ charcoals turn to ash!?
I took out the old charcoal and it was black lumps like it should be, after using them for some time!. I put the new ones in and they turned to ash in one cooking!. I didn't know this until they cooled down and I went to rearrange them and the fell into the bottom like powder!. Why would that happen!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Yes, there are different types of charcoal, some that burn faster than others!. Probably the quickest burning is the type that has already been treated with lighter fluid, such as "Match Light" or similar products!. The second being your just everyday normal charcoal, which you need a starter to light!. The longest burning charcoal to you would probably be Mesquite!. Here in Hawaii, Kiawe charcoal (which is similar to mesquite), is definitely the longest burning of them all!. You probably put the faster burning charcoal on top!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Heating a piece of charcoal is NOT like heating a piece of coal!. Remember!.!.!.char-coal is just that!.!.!.!.nothing more than a piece of charred wood or wood chips/sawdust which is compressed into a cube!. If you have any hope of using the same peice twice you must soak the charcoal pieces in water to stop the burning process after you are done cooking!. Even then, what you are left with is a much SMALLER piece of charred wood that won't burn as hot or for as long!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

charcoal is supposed to turn gray-white BEFORE you cook on it! !.!.!. If you BBQ while it's still burning the black charcoal, you'll burn your food!. You wait until the heat is evenly dispursed throughout the white charcoal!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Did you wait too long before using them!?

That is the only explanation I can think of!.

Once they are burned up they turn to ash!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

That's what they are suppose to do!Www@FoodAQ@Com
