it's a pie!. I love cheesecake, and I love pie (but I don't like this need people seem to have for making hybrid names!.!.!.I don't understand it)
You can liken it to cream pies in the way it's made up: you have a crumbly, usually graham cracker, crust on the bottom, then a smooth and creamy filling, and occassionally some decoration or garnishment on top!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

NY style cheesecake is cake!. The pudding-like cheesecakes that get poured into a pie pan are pie, IMHO!.
Not all cakes are light and fluffy/floury!. There are many types of chocolate cakes that are flourless and dense!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Definitely not a cake in my opinion, cake should be spongie, fluffy & light!. Cheesecake on the other hand is more solid and heavy!. I love cheesecake!!!Www@FoodAQ@Com
Hmm, at the least I would say pie, maybe a custard!? Not sure what the culinary definition of custard is!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
