Answers:
The lava rocks serve more than one purpose: they hold and spread out your heat, (not as much as your burner, obviously, but they do help) and they will catch drippings and help reduce flare ups and fires!. Many people replace the rocks each year after they get dirty or start to fall apart!. I wouldn't recommend using the grill without rocks or lava bricks in the bottom!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The lava rocks help diffuse the heat for even cooking!. I guess I can see the rocks retaining some heat!.

I think in the long run, you do use less propane, but mainly due to the better heat distribution!.

Instead of lava rocks, some grills come with a metal heat distribution plates which function as "lava rocks"!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

No Charcoal!.

Use Lave Rock, heavily!.

You can use ceramic briquettes also!.

Both the Lava Rock and Ceramic Briquettes, will disperse the heat more evenly, prevent some flareups!. and help hold even heat throughout the cooking process!. you can leave items in the grill after turning it off and it will keep warm for quite some time!.!.

Never use a gas grill without them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

You wouldn't put charcoal in it but you could do the lava rocks if you were going to try to cook something for a long time!.

You can also buy a little tray and put wood chips in it for a smokey flavor!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Please!!! A gas grill works on propane that takes a tank of fuel that you can buy anywhere!. I just bought a Chamglow Red that does not have a flame but radiant heat but still works on propane!. Have a nice day!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Is your husband blonde!?

NO CHARCOAL! It just makes a mess!. Once those upside-down V-shaped bars over the flames get hot, they will make flavor and smoke as fat and juices drip from cooking!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

you don't put charcoal in a gas grill, that's why it's called a gas grill!Www@FoodAQ@Com

Yep!. My dad does that and it works great!. It makes the grill heat more evenly!.

Lava rocks -- not charcoal!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
