I would have to say no!. Lots of people take it because its a good summer treat!. But its not a must have, I usually make something with fruit and its not always watermelon and my little sisters, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, and parents LOVE it! I usually cut up apples pineapple canlope tangerines oranges plums grapes watermelon and put it on a cabob like someone else has suggested!. I sometimes use lemons and limes because my cousins and I are CRAZY for them! I wish you good luck with your picnic!Www@FoodAQ@Com

NO! watermelon is so good, but what a mess it makes! and the ants!?! forget it! I much rather have stawberries and whipped cream or peaches or apricots, I'm sorry but when I'm on a picnic I want to enjoy myself, not have to work and fight off the ants!lolWww@FoodAQ@Com

No it isn't a must but it is usually a big hit!. You can use any melon or fruit!.
OR
Make a basket out of the water melon shell and fill it with a bunch of different fruits and melon balls!. = )Www@FoodAQ@Com
