The decorations can be made out of buttercream frosting, royal frosting, fondant, or gum paste!. You can make them yourself!.
I would check to see if you can find any cake decorating classes in your area, as there are different techniques!. You can check the Wilton site to see if there are classes in your area!. http://www!.wilton!.com/classes/local_clas!.!.!.
also check craft stores, community classes, etc!. to see if cake decorating is offered!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The BUTTERCREAM ICING that is used, can be made using a variety of options!.
BUTTERCREAM ICING (Stiff Consistency)
1 teaspoon Wilton Clear Vanilla Extract
2 tablespoons Milk or water
1cup solid Vegatable Shortening (Crisco Sticks are easy)
1 tablespoon Wilton Meringue Powder
1 pound Confectioners' sugar (approx 4 cups)
OPTIONAL use 1/2 tsp butter extract and 1/2 tsp Clear Vanilla extract inplace of the 1 teaspoon Clear Vanilla Extract!. A pinch of salt may also be added!. (I have never added the salt, However, I have always used the butter extract)
2nd option!.!.!.!.!.use Butter inplace of the Crisco!. You won't get the pure white icing, but it will be tasty
Sift confectioners sugar and Meringue Powder together and set aside!.
Cream shortening with flavorings and milk or water!. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together!. Blend an additional minute or so until creamy!.
If you want a medium consistency icing, then just add 1 teaspoon of milk or water for each 1 cup of stiff icing!. 1 tablespoon for the whole batch!.
Most flowers are made with either the stiff or medium consistency!. If you want to write on your cake, then you will need a little more liquid to your icing!.
At most larger craft stores, you can usually sign up for the Wilton Decorating classes!. If you want to teach yourself, you can sometimes purchase the course book and kit at the same craft stores where you could take the class!.
I have taken the classes and have had quite a bit of fun with it!.
If you were refering to the fancy cakes like on ACE OF CAKES, then, that is usually a Fondant!. Totally different!. That is something you can purchase already made and all you do is roll it out to a size slightly larger than your cake and put it on!. It actually is somewhat more difficult than this, and for a good result, you will mostl likely want to take a class on it!.
Good luck, I hope I have helped!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
