I can't answer his question. Can you?!

Question: I can't answer his question!. Can you!?
My husband baked a cake and baked it for the time called for!. It looked good and then the middle fell!. The outside was done but the middle fell and wasn't completely cooked!. What was the cause!? Should it have cooked longer!? Is there something wrong with my oven!? What sould I do!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Your oven might not be calibrated quite accurately and might be running a little hotter than you think!. Try putting an oven thermometer inside and see if it matches!. If it doesn't match, you can adjust in the future!. Or have it calibrated!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It sounds like you baked it at too high of temperature, so the out side was done and the inside was not!. If you baked it at the temperature that was called for, then your oven may cook a little faster than the average oven!. Next time cook it at a lower temperature for a little while longer!. You'll know when it is done, after you insert a toothpick!.(If it comes out clean then it is done!.)Www@FoodAQ@Com

There could be something wrong with the oven OR the temperature was set wrong!. Remember, baking is an actually SCIENCE while cooking is more of an art!. If you put too much spice in your dinner, you can always add more ingrediants to correct the taste!. Not so with baking!. Too much or too little of any one ingrediant can drastically change the results!. My only suggestion is to try again - following the recipe to a "T" and making sure the temperature is correct on the oven (also MAKE SURE THE OVEN IS COMPLETELY HEATED BEFORE PUTTING THE CAKE IN!.!.!. DO NOT PLACE BATTER IN OVEN WHILE IT IS STILL HEATING)!. If this doesn't work, you probably need a new stove!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

A litany of things:

-Your oven's thermometer may not be accurate!. More common than you think!.
-Oven may not have completely pre-heated!.
-If you live at a high altitude, this impacts cooking times (less oxygen)!.
-Temperature of mixture at time of putting into oven!.

Easy rule for baking; slow it down a bit, and use a toothpick!. If the toothpick goes into the middle of the cake and comes out clean, you're done!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

oven temperatures vary!. before taking any cake out, you should check the middle with a toothpick!. if it's still gooey on the toothpick, put it back in the oven and check on it every 5 minutes or so until the toothpick comes out clean!. if it takes longer than say, 15 minutes, you could have an issue with your oven!. oven temps don't vary that drastically!. are you sure he used the correct amount of ingredients!? maybe too much oil or water!? hope this helps!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

the oven may not have been hot enough or you didnt pre heat the oven 10 mins before putting the cake in
some cakes need longer than the specfied time if more ingredients have been used than in the recipe or depending on what type of cake it is and the ingredients used
or maybe your oven settings are different
there are many reasons as to why this may have happened
hope i helped!Www@FoodAQ@Com

All ovens vary a bit in temperature!. Insert a skewer into the center of the cake to ensure it comes out clean, (for fruit cakes) for a sponge cake, it will shrink away from the edge a little and spring back when GENTLY pressed! Ensure all ingredients are at room temp too, otherwise it will need longer cooking time!.
I'm impressed he makes cakes!.!.!. Mine just makes a HUGE mess, and needs 9 pans to do so!
I'm impresses you got him making a cake!.!.!.!. Mind just makes a messWww@FoodAQ@Com

Could be a consistency problem with the cakes shape!.!.!.!.
Could be a density problem in the cakes center!.!.!.!.!.
--------------------------------------!.!.!.
Hmm!.!.!.!. If the cake had a filling that could have been the problem with the density in the center!. In which case you would have to make the outer layer thicker and the center filling thinner!.
--------------------------------------!.!.!.
If the cake was layered or thicker in middle to thinner outter shape then that would be the shape problem/consistency !.
In which it would have to be balanced better or layered thinner to fix!.
--------------------------------------!.!.!.
If other then it's the ovens baking temp!. i'm guessing :)Www@FoodAQ@Com

It should have cooked longer!. Always stick a toothpick in the middle of the cake!. If it pulls out dry, then the cake is done!. Cooking times vary by many differernt situations!. The box directions are just a good guideline, but not always precise!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I am not a world class baker, but I think that was because of the ingredients!. Was it a box or from scratch!? If it was from a box it might have been a bad mix, and if it was scratch it might have been something you put in itWww@FoodAQ@Com

Sounds like it needed more time, also sounds like the oven door was opened early!. Next time use your nose!. Meaning stick it in the oven , when it starts to smell sweet then check on it!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It may have been a lot thicker than the recipe intended!. Next time use a lower temperature and cook it for longer or make a smaller cake!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

My Grandma always said don't jump up and down in the house or run it jars the oven and the cake will fall!*Www@FoodAQ@Com

Opening the oven door when it's not ready, making the temperature go down!. That'll cause the middle part to sink!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
