Croutons are not stale bread, but they can be if you buy stale croutons!. Croutons are cut up pieces of bread that are coated with oil (probably something synthetic, or a mixed oil, for the packaged stuff - I make my own and use olive oil) along with herbs and spices, and then toasted to give them crunch and dry them out a bit!. They're sealed for many reasons - some you've been given, another is for shipping purposes, so you don't end up with a bag of bread crumbs since the bag is filled only part way and then filled the remainder of the way with air, just like they do chips and pretzels!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

they are not stale bread they are cooked !.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.toasted with some olive oil !.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.they need to be kept air tight to keep them FRESH!!!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.best way by far is to make your own that way you can have the flavour you want!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.and for the amount you get in a pack it would only take one slice of bread cut into small cubes!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.

cut up and brush lightly with olive oil and toast in the oven or toast in a large hot frying pan (griddle in the usa)!.!.!.!.!.!.add the herbs or some garlic !.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.delicious!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.let them cool if you need to store them !.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.they will not keep as long as shop bought as you can't vacume pack unless you have the machineWww@FoodAQ@Com

it is so they do not get soggy!. When in the process of shipping, storing etc!.!.!. they have a lot of chances to come in contact with moisture!. The air tight seal keeps them from getting moisture and becoming uncrisp!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

well that is your view!.!.!.
but they have some moisture to keep of some flavor even if it is a hint of salt !.!.!.BTW
they are tiny baked bits of crackers!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

True!. But if humidity gets in the package, they will get chewy instead of crunchy!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

So they do not absorb moisture in the air and become soggy, and mould!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

to mike right above me, croutons are bits of bread, not crackersWww@FoodAQ@Com

So they stay crisp and crunchy!Www@FoodAQ@Com
