How to use an oven while baking cakes?!
Im baking cakes(Im only a kid) I've never really used an oven before, the instructions on my cake mix say pre-heat the oven to 220C/425F(my oven is in Celcius) I understand that part!. Then it says Gas mark 7!? The third dial on my oven has an F above it and there are pictures on the dial, starting with a light bulb!? What is Gas mark 7 and what is the third dial all about!?Www@FoodAQ@Com
Answers:
The "gas mark 7" is for people who have gas ovens; because your shows temperatures instead of something like that, you can ignore it!.
Basic instructions:
1!. Put the racks in the oven on the right level for your cake(s)!. It's easiest to do this before heating!. also, remove everything from the top of the oven!. Many ovens vent air over one of the burners on the stove, and that burner can get hot enough to catch things on fire!.
2!. Preheat the oven!. There should be a little light to tell you when the oven has heated up to the proper temperature!. To turn the oven on, you just set the temperature--this should turn it on!. Some ovens have a second on-off dial, however!.
Now, you've said that your oven has 3 dials on it!. One is to set temperature!. One has these pictures on it, and the third!? Does the oven heat up when you just set the temperature dial!? If not, what's on the third dial, and what are all of the pictures on the second dial!?
3!. Set up the cake according to the instructions, then put it in the oven, keeping the door open for as little time as possible!. Keeping it open for too long changes the temperature!. also, push the cake towards the back of the oven; the temperature remains more equal there, especially when testing the cake for doneness later on!.
4!. Some recipes will have you change the temperature of the oven half-way through; most cakes are fine with just one temperature!.
5!. When the end of the cooking time approaches, start checking on the cake regularly!. For most cakes, you can slide a knife into it and put it out to test for doneness!. If the knife is clean when you pull it out (or in some cases, just has a little moist cake on it), the cake is done!. If it's gooey, the cake needs to cook for longer!. Toothpicks are often used with the same instructions!.
Keep in mind that every time you check it, you release a lot of hot air and the oven has to heat up again, so don't too it too often--avoid opening the oven door, and only do the toothpick/knife test when the cake looks done!.
The timing and temperatures are something you have to learn about *your* oven, however!. I've found that every new oven has required minor tweaks to temperatures and timing!. This is probably because the thermometers in ovens aren't all set correctly, but the size and design of the oven can be important factors, too!. That said, start checking BEFORE the cake should be done to avoid burning it, just in case your oven runs a little hotter than average!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
