Question: When a recipe calls specifically for shortening, can I use butter!?

Depending on what you are making!. Sometimes if a recipe calls for shortening it is because it works better for flavor and texture!.

Be very careful here!.!.!.most of the answers aren't based in fact!. Some recipes call for shortening as someone eluded to because it doesn't burn as easily as butter!. Shortening is usually a vegetable fat, not an animal fat like butter or lard!. NEVER substitute margarine for shortening or butter because it is processed with water and will alter the recipe especially when baking!. Don't substitute liquid oils for shortening either, they will not gel when cooled as shortening does!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
