Fact or Fiction: a good cook does not put salt shakers on the table?!

Question: Fact or Fiction: a good cook does not put salt shakers on the table!?
I was raised to believe a good cook did not have to put salt or pepper shakers on the table!. It was OK to serve pickles, chutney, catsup & mustard when serving hamburgers, gravy or sauce for meat, green onions, pickled watermelon rind or radishes with Thanksgiving turkey!. Am I hopelessly behind the times!?Www@FoodAQ@Com

Answers:
Absolutely not true!.
Some people live on salt and some people don't want salt at all!.
The trend today is that a chef uses little or no salt at all and let's the guest add his/her own to their own liking!.
Family is different!.
With your family, you have a good grasp on what everyone likes and you can go from there!.
A chef has no idea who's ordering what!.( unless they know the particular person)!.
Let me also say, that once salt has been added, you can't get it out!. If it needs salt the person can always add it!.

Salt and Pepper on the table!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It's polite to put the shakers on the table to give someone the option to add more seasoning!. However it is bad form to season without tasting the food first!. I personally have a pepper fetish (I add freshly ground pepper even to my salads)however I never put as much as I'd actually like on when I'm at other peoples houses for dinner but that's just so I don't offend the cook!. Oh and every reastaraunt I know of has a salt and pepper shaker on the table, people will even come by and offer the fresh ground in nice reastaraunts!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I imagine some people think a good cook makes it so that no one needs extra salt/pepper/etc!., but the fallacy in that is that (1) everyone's tastes are different and (2) not everyone cares if they are sullying your artistic creation(the food) with extra whatever!. In the final analysis, it's the taste of the one eating the food that rules, IMHO!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I have heard that if the meal is prepared correctly the person eating it should not need additional salt and pepper!. I however realize that everyone has different tastes, and I also like to add a teeny bit of extra "fresh"salt onmy meals!. But every dish should be tasted before adding salt and pepper!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

To me there is no right answer to this question!. Why!?!? I do belive that one persons choice in the saltiness of a dish won't be the next persons!. As in my father likes his popcorn with a lot of salt on and I like just enough to taste it!. So when it comes to cooking for people that have different tastes in salt i tend to go on the easy side of the salt and let the people who eat my food salt it to their own taste!. And NO I don't take offense when people pick up the salt shaker and salt what i have carefully prepared for them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Unanswerable!.

A good cook focuses on the kitchen and the quality of the food prepared, not the dining table!. That is the host's responsibility to ensure the comfort of the guests!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

False, I agree with Cadillac Dan, you please your guests , not yourself!. I have eaten at some fabulous restaurants and there are ALWAYS S&P shakers on the table and I have never had the chef come out waving his chopping knife in insultWww@FoodAQ@Com

A good cook makes people happy regardless of where the salt shaker is!. People's tastes vary!. You can't cater to everyone with a single dish, prepared a certain way!. Some folks will simply always want more salt!. Plain and simple!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Fiction A Good cook will usually have it on the table but offer to put it on your food for you!. It's the same think with salt!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

An exceptional cook would have a meal that would please all without the need to salt or pepper extra!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Fiction!.

Either way, the person who eats the cooks food, adjusts the flavour to his/her taste!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Ummm, that may be true, but I think a good host or hostess DOES include S&P on the dining table!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

a great cook will prepare the dish so that extra salt and pepper are not needed!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

False!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

yesWww@FoodAQ@Com

Fact!. You are not behind the times, it is an insult to a cook if the person has to salt or pepper their dinner!. The meal should be prepared so that you don't need to use any salt or pepper!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
