The sugar will thicken the mixture, but you don't need a specific amount!.!.!.usually about a tablespoon per cup of berries, but it would be whatever you want depending on how sweet or tart you want them!. If you let it simmer for about ten minutes on med-low it will make it more gooey and less like juicy strawberries!. If you use fresh strawberries, you may want to squish them a little (not too much!) to make them softer before you cook them down!.

Here's what I would do, but it's not exact and you can change it to get the consistency and sweetness you want:

2 c!. strawberries
1/2 c!. water
2 tsp!. fine sugar

mix in a saucepan and bring to a boil!. Once sauce boils, turn heat to medium-low and let simmer for about 10 minutes or until sauce thickens as desired!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

If you have time just cut the berries up and put sugar all over them to cover, and stir and let it sit at room temp for about an hour, it will make it's own juice and it will be great, the longer you let it sit the better, but if overnight refrigerate, even though, when I was a kid they never did!. It's called macerating them!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
