I do plan menus now because it is easier for me to not have to worry about "What's for dinner!?" at the last minute!. I usually jot down a list of ideas for a week at a time!. When I say ideas, I mean I try to be flexible regarding quality of items I find, plus what is on sale at the time that I shop!.
I go online to my local grocery stores sites and check out their sales papers, then make a list!.
I try to keep a good stock of staples at home with the "basics": flour, oil, salt, etc!. After that comes the more fun stuff: different sauces, and marinades, canned beans, canned tomatoes, pasta sauces, pastas, seasoning packets (although I prefer to make my own seasoning blends!), corn muffin mix, rice and rice mixes!. You get the idea!
I try to buy fresh veggies and fruits every week, and I usually buy things that don't have to be used quickly like apples, oranges and bananas!. If I buy strawberries or peaches I try to use them sooner!.
Hope this helps!Www@FoodAQ@Com

I shop weekly!. Before I go I look at what is in my freezer, and work out how many main meals I need to cook before the next shopping trip!. Then as I shop I plan which meals we'll have, not necessarily the order of them!. If something is on special I might buy a few meals worth of it!.
The shopping list is a running affair!. It hangs on the fridge and whenever we run out of anything the person who used it writes it on the list!.
I also have a list on my freezer door of what meat I still have in there, so I only have to glance at it to decide what to cook, instead of rummaging thru trying to find something!.
I buy fresh fruits and vegetables during the weekly shop, if we run out of staples like bread, milk, etc I will go buy more, and may top up the fruit at the same time!.
I do a fair bit of baking so I always have flour, sugar, eggs, baking power, salt, cocoa, on hand!. Most of my meals are made from scratch, so I also have plenty of herbs and spices!.
If I try a new recipe and it has ingredients I wouldn't normally use, I find other recipes to use them up in so I dont waste too much!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

I do sometimes, and it makes my meals go much more smoothly!
I take a sheet of A4 typing paper, and fold it into eight sections, then label each section with a day of the week!. The last, eigth section, is my shopping list space!. I briefly write down what we want to eat for breakfast, lunch and supper, then note it down in the shopping list!. If I need to do some special prep (like pizza dough the night before), I note it on the day I have to do it!.
Sometimes I split the shopping list in half, and shop for veggies/fruit on Wednesday as well as the weekend!.
Staples!? flour, cheese, milk, bananas, canned fruit, canned tuna, spaghetti sauce (which I use for pizza sauce as well)!. I also like to keep some chicken thighs in the freezer, and some corn chips for taco salad!.
My big problem is that it's easy to get off the schedule -- but since I shop twice a week, I can usually re-work a menu so that we don't have veggies rotting in the fridge!. (-: Although, this doesn't always work!
Keep in mind what's going on that day -- if you have a busy evening, don't try and make lasagna from scratch!. Stick to something super-quick, like frozen food, or salmon and steamed spinach with bakery bread!. Take advantage of the weekend to make something with leftovers!. Chicken broth, which can be used in many dishes during the week, for example!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
