I don't know why it happens but it happens the other way too!. Once I saw a guy at a gas station pour a steaming bucket of water onto his windshield on a really cold day!. It shattered all over the place!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The glass that touched the water contracted faster than the hot area around it could compensate!. The material then separated & the shock wave created traveled thru the glass & stressed it to the point of destruction!. This in laymans terms describes the previous ans "thermal shock" which is perfectly correct but a bit short on detail!.Www@FoodAQ@Com
because if hot things touch cold things they break kinda like a tornado or if you come in from cold weater into a hot house you get a cold!. It's called thermal shock the puddle was probably cold!. the temperature change is hard on the glass and if it's hard enough it breaks!. It happened to my mom!. she put hot water in her cold wedding pitcher from the fridge and it broke!.
but yea sry bout the plate!.!.!. I hope you don't get in trouble!.!.!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

The puddle of water was cold compared to the heated up glass!. The change in temperature weaken the glass and caused it to crack!.
Let's hope your grandma wasn't attached to that plate! I would also suggest maybe buying her another one :)Www@FoodAQ@Com
