I have made that same cake mix in a 9 x 12 pan, it works just fine!. Be sure to watch it, the timing may be different, I can't remember!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Part of the reason to use the tube pan is because the air circulation is needed to make the cake fluffy texture!. If you poured the same batter in a flat cake pan, it totally would not have the same texture as an angel food cake!. It would probably taste ok as a cake, just won't have that texture!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

it just comes out the shape of the pan you baked it in rather than round as if it were baked in a Bundt pan!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

It will be soggy in the centre & collapse!.
Try inverting a heat-proof glass or metal tube in the centre!.Www@FoodAQ@Com

Just go for it,I'm sure it'll be fine!.
If all else fails, take your son to Baskin Robbins ;DWww@FoodAQ@Com
